That's just as well, because there's plenty of romantic triangulation--or worse--going on. Clark's former love interest--and his first LL--Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), has returned from her summer in Paris sporting a new boyfriend, Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles), as well as a mysterious tattoo that seems to have something to do with a set of Kryptonian crystals as well as Jason's sinister mom, Genevieve (Jane Seymour). Keeping his relationship with Lana a secret, Jason has signed on as Smallville High's new assistant football coach. What's surprising is that the team's new quarterback is none other than Clark, who's grown tired of hiding his super-strength, super-speed, and invulnerability and wants to be part of the team. But nothing's easy for Clark, and he goes through the prom, a marriage, and fatherhood, not necessarily in that order, as well as his secret being discovered, unknown to him, by one of his closest friends. (On the plus side, he does uncover a cool new power.)
But the key to the season is the Kryptonian crystals. They further deteriorate the relationship between the incarcerated Lionel Luthor (John Glover), and his son, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Lex may be Clark's best friend, but he reveals more of his dark side in a revelation about his sexual escapades and a split-personality (literally) incident. Lana's frightening dreams actually come to life in a silly Charmed-type episode. Then in the explosive season finale, the main characters are scattered and another meteor shower threatens to wipe out the town.
One of the fun things about Smallville is how producers Al Gough and Miles Millar and their team of writers acknowledge their place in a 70-year Superman mythos (even if Clark is never referred to as Superman). His DC Comics origins receive a nod with appearances by the Flash, Krypto the superdog, and the magical Mxyztplk. And the cast includes not only regular Annette O'Toole (Martha Clark), who had played Lana Lang in Superman III, but guest shots by Margot Kidder (Bridgette Porter) and Terence Stamp (the voice of Jor-El), and the late Christopher Reeve gets a brief but touching farewell in an announcement of the passing of his character, Dr. Virgil Swann.
Extras include 15 minutes with the writing team, a spotlight on Kidder, Durance, and others who have played Lois Lane, deleted scenes, and three episodes with commentary from combinations of Gough, Millar, Durance, Kreuk, Glover and others, but not Welling. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews of Smallville - The Complete Fourth Season
OMG, this season was almost actually great! Smallville in the beginning was never that good a show. And in fact my opinion is that I didn't like some of the things the Shows writers and creators did to the legacy... like having Jor-el be a bullying disembodied demigod, and the still continual volleying romance between Clark and Lana(which actually has never come to fruition... big surprise, huh?). There were HOWEVER some good things about this season! One of the first things was that Clark came back and he was flying for a while until he was changed back by Black Kryptonite. Also, the inclusion of Lois Lane into the cast also helped things a bit. Another nice little plot point came along, specifically the appearance of The Flash(Who isn't referred to as THE FLASH or is dressed in the typical red outfit with accompanying lightning bolts, but we know it's him because of his Logo on his belt buckle and his backpack) who foreshadows the future by telling Clark "Maybe we can form a LEAGUE or something" before he runs off in a FLASH!(sorry, couldn't resist)And of course all the unimportant interstitial crap is still present and far too abundant for my taste, although it was nice to see both Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeves guest starring in this season and in one episode in season 3. The season finale was played fairly well, although it was also kind of predictable. Where does it go from here you ask? My optimistic answer is the use of a classical score instead of the awful song "Save me" by Remy Zero.
Excellent
Smallville is one of the best things on TV now so the minute the series is out I have to grab them.

>As an avid fan of Tom Welling, I am crazy for him and I've never been disappointed with any of Smallville's shows.
Paradigm Shift in Season 4...may disappoint, may enthrall...
The first thing you'll be greeted with when you launch into Season 4 are ads from Warner Brothers. I also had some problems with jumps and skips on a couple of the disks which leads me to believe that these were rushed out cheaply and quickly. Maybe they need the revenue, because this season is by far the costliest in terms of production values...and it shows.

>But SMALLVILLE was never as much about the special effects as it was the coming of age story of Clark Kent. I didn't think I'd miss Pete Ross as much as I did...there's a big loss of innocence in the Senior Year at Smallville High. More profanity, more nudity and even though the storylines are more complex and adult, the dialogue never manages to keep up with it...remaining very cliched, even silly at times. This is obviously a transitional season trying to bridge the gap between stages in the development of the Man of Steel. Lots of uneven vacillating between sophomoric and sophisticated. And--ugh---welcome to modern television: PRODUCT PLACEMENT!

>The greatest thing is that SMALLVILLE remains ever respectful of its history in the DC Universe, all the while reinventing the sage for a contemporary audience...so as not to alienate we purists. It's fun to see THE FLASH, KRYPTO, MXYZPLTK, LUCY and LOIS LANE, etc etc (I'm still not sure how I feel about the casting of this latest Lois...) and all the inside jokes paying homage to the characters' various incarnations over the years.

>Tom Welling, by now, has grown into the red boots he had to fill and does an earnest, credible job in every episode. Michael Rosenbaum, too, is a great Lex Luthor and Annette O'Toole should be applauded for bringing so much dimension to a generally thankless "Mom" role. John Glover is so great and brings considerable muscle to the show in general. John Schneider and Allison Mack, however, seem to have exhausted their worth by Season 4.

>A real treat is having Margot Kidder pop up in a recurring role.

>It's the ongoing mix of innovation and nostalgia that make SMALLVILLE a consistent pleasure to watch...truly a comic book for TV. Not every issue is a gem, but they're all worth collecting.
