Customer Reviews of Sleepaway Camp
Awesome 80's slasher fun I remember hearing about this movie in high school, but never saw it thinking it was another Friday the 13th clone. Recently i've been stockpiling 80's slasher flicks on video and i saw this one for sale so i picked it up. The movie starts out with a father and his daughter and son on a lake in a boat. Some empty headed teenagers come along in a motor boat and run over the father and one of the kids. Flash forward eight years and the two lead characters, Ricky and cousin Angela are heading off to sleepaway camp Arawak. These kids are real young in fact i was like 13 when this movie came out, so i was like they're age, and sort of could identify with the mentality. Angela is very quiet and is mocked by the other kids at the camp, but alas cousin Ricky is constantly coming to her rescue. Soon people are being knocked off, standard body count for the early 80's. Nothing really original here, but there are some weird dream sequences involving Angela to keep the movie interesting. Towards the end Angela gets thrown into the lake by an enemy. Now, this dosen't sound important, but it is when you see the ending; if you have never seen this movie i won't give the ending away but i will tell you that it is shocking to say the least, brilliant and stupid at the same time. Can you say he/she? The thick New Yawk accents cracked me up and these kids really had filthy mouths, but you will definately think of Friday the 13th, which was the standard bearer for slasher films.
One of the best Horror Movies?
Wow this film is awesome! I definately recommend you see this film as it has every element of a first class horror movie. It starts off with a family consisting of 1 guy (the father) and his 2 kids on a tiny boat enjoying the summer, however a speedboat goes out of control and maims and kills the dad and his daughter (his other kid survives and goes to live with her aunt and Foul Mouthed cousin Ricky). 8 years later (the now 12yr old) Angela joins her older cousin Ricky (13) to go stay at his favourite summer camp: Camp Arawak! Anglea is very quiet so much so she is mute (seriously!)and doesn't really fit in or join in on any other the activities going on there, so she inevitably is picked on and teased by the other campers. Ricky (apart from playing some cool jokes on his mates, having fun and sporting a mullet Pat Sharpe would be ashamed of) is always at Angelas side protecting her and fighting off bullies. After a couple of gruesome murders including Artie 9the camps very pervy chef) Ricky's best mate Paul cracks Angela's silence and the two become a couple however Paul was caught in the bushes with Judy (the worst of all the tormenters to Angela) and Angela is very upset. So begin more gruesome murders and more torment! The ending is an absolute classic never to be missed or witnessed again! This is a classic whodunit, gory, suspensful, shorts so short it should be illegal and well worked movie, it has shocks, the worlds worst moustache, violence and men wearing crop tops! There's great acting by Ricky, awful acting by Frank the Cop and ohmygodissheforreal acting by aunt Martha (an actress obviosly snorting more than just snuff!) This is one of the best Horror movies ive ever seen and i'm a die hard horror fan, Please watch this FILM! and enjoy....
Surprizingly fun and "campy" horror flick....
I will say, I am huge horror fan, but always steered clear of the "Sleepaway Camp" series until today. I always thought the movies looked and sounded really stupid. And I was pretty much right, but in a good way. ;P
Sleepaway camp is one of those movies that has cheesey and over-the-top acting, plenty of stereo types, but somehow it all works.
This movie is about a girl named Angela and her cousin Ricky going away to summer camp. It of course is supposed to be a lot of fun. But Angela is very shy and doesn't want to talk to anyone or play any games or anything so she is picked on a good deal. And not to far after they get to camp, people start to die.
Its pretty clear who is the killer from the get-go, but it still keeps you interested because its a fun movie, and you keep wondering "WHY?" are they killing. It actually has a nasty little twist of an ending too. And the sad thing is, that what happened to the killer isn't far from what has happened to some people(seen a similar case on dateline, except without all the murders).
I didn't think this movie was slow, but I don't have a short attention span either. But I'd say that if you like horror movies, or movies that are so bad their good, then you'll like "Sleepaway Camp", its worth at least one view, its pretty darn funny(unintenionally most of the time.). The gore is pretty good too, its not to explicit so it leaves some to the imagination, but it shows just enough. All in all, worthwhile horror film. :D
God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy
