Customer Reviews of Skin
Wow, what a woman. Melissa Etheridge may have great songs such as "Breakdown", "Come to my window", "Ain't it heavy" or "I'm the only one".
But after her broken relationship with her female partner, she wrote the lyrics for this album. The lyrics are powerful and also a little bit depresing and hurtful but with lots of feeling.
I'm gonna write a phrase of each song so you know what I'm talking about.
1-LOVER PLEASE. (A shot in the dark Iwoke up the find, you had broke all the rules and you changed your mind, didn't I love you right?).
2-THE PRISON. (I held you so close I thought my soul would brake, but you were a ghost, the holiest mistake).
3-WALKING ON WATER. (What did you want?, how could I guess, you wanted more, I gave you less).
4-DOWN TO ONE. (What went wrong?. Doesn't really matter when it's gone).
5-GOODNIGHT. (All I want tonight is to touch you and kiss you, but I only kiss you goodnight).
6-IT'S ONLY ME. (When the night is done and the morning arrives...it's only me).
7-I WANT TO BE IN LOVE. (You stand on the doorstep in the rain, cause you couldn't wait to see me once again).
8-PLEASE FORGIVE ME. (It's been so long since I've touched, so long since I wanted, the you made me laugh and my heart opened).
9-THE DIFFERENT. ('cause you learn to hold on and time make it heal and time will make it gone).
10-HEAL ME feat. Laura Dern and Meg Ryan (Heal me, lift me, take me to the waterside, drop me in, let me swim, let everyone know, I'll be coming home again).
Melissa Etheridge is a 2 time Grammy award winner and has sold over 25 million copies.
I feel that this is her best work ever even though it didn't have the success of her previous cd's.
Sublime Rock
Melissa Etheridge's "Skin" is a masterwork in rock & roll. Her opener "Lover Please" is one of the best rock tunes of the decade, currently #1 in my own personal top ten. It's the kind of song one can't pass without hitting the repeat button. "The Prison" is a gorgeous melody with a slower beat and great lyric, "I held you so close I thought my soul would break, but you were just a ghost, the holiest mistake." "Walking On Water" & "Down to One" are another two favorite great tracks with gorgeous melodies and passionate vocals. "Goodnight" snakes with a propulsive beat, a sexy lyric & Melissa's expansive vocals. "It's Only Me" is another strong track with Melissa bearing her heart on vocals. The CD concludes with a midtempo masterpiece "Heal Me," "Amazing grace has touched my face & the sweet sound doesn't lie." This is a classic set by one of America's great rock singer/composers. Summer doesn't get any hotter than this! Enjoy!
Etheridge's most honest effort
This is a really extrodinary album from Melissa Etheridge. There are so many emotions, the songs are painfully real and vivid with detail. Of course this album came on the heels of her breakup with longtime girlfriend Julie Cypher. It is an incredibly vulnerable and at the same time, a brilliant record. The songs range from dispair, disappointment, hope, and other emotions. The album opens with the wonderful rocker "Lover Please", which is an instant hit upon listening to it. I really like "The Prison", a song I can very much identify with, about feeling stuck in a situation or a place, state of mind, whatever. Great song! "Walking On Water" is a great song, just very blunt and obvious. "Down To One" is simply heartbreaking, another great song. The first single was "I Want To Be In Love", an epiphany of sorts, a nice pop/rock song with a positive sound and message, about knowing what you want and doing whatever you can to get it. The album closes with "Heal Me", a positive song about renewel and starting over. This is a really good album, very deep in terms of lyrics. She wrote all the songs and played a number of instruments on all of them. She really brings the revealing lyrics alive with her raw vocals, she truly sounds like she poured her heart all over this and wore it on her sleeve for all to see. A very impressive Melissa Etheridge album that does not disapoint in the least.
