Customer Reviews of Skarmageddon, Vol. 4: Armageddon Time!
Somewhat disappointing Ska is like Pizza. When it's bad, it's still pretty good, fills you up, leaves you satisfied. But, you would rather have the most delicious pizza there is. When ska is good, you get a that chilly but sensual "nerd-gazm", like when a good comic book movie comes out. Well, Skarmageddon 4 is certainly adequate, but it isn't the best, like Skarmageddon 3, or the most diverse, like Skaramageddon 1. It is just okay. The bright spots, I think, Skabba the hut's song "Fat guy on my head" is quite good, and The Chinkees, Slow Gerkin are always good and I invite you to buy their records from Asian Man himself. Buy it to *sob* complete your moon ska collection.
worthwhile for its highlights
i will be honest, most of this collection is pure garbage. one too many? skabba the hut? just two names in a long list of bands who you will never want to hear from again (and never will, thankfully)
but what makes this double cd worthwhile, if only to the enthusiast, are the few tracks that come out on top... the tracks which may help maintain your faith in ska as a musical form. Crazy Baldhead, the Blue Roots, Vic Rice, Rocker T, the Israelites... solid musicianship and solid tracks that will make you think "hey, there *is* a reason to still like ska!" These artists seem to know the best out of the whole bunch where ska is rooted, and execute it fully. Others failed in defining ska by upbeats on a guitar, these groups succeed by knowing that ska is a complete feel.
Not as good as the 3rd, but contains very good songs
The cover art definitly isn't as good as the 3rd Skarm., but like its predeccessor, this Skarm has great songs and features a wide variety of stlyes (the last two songs of the second cd are dub (#17 by an Indian?!)) I recommend this cd to those uninitiated to Ska, those who love the old Skarm(like myself), and even those Ska purists (also like myself) who seldom venture out of Jamaica. You won't find those too numerous, and undeservedly popular: SO-CALLED-"RUDE BOYS"-WITH-FAKE-JAMAICAN-ACCENTS (i.e., Hepcat and Pietasters ...) on this cd! Moon Ska is a great asset to Ska music, I believe that they rank up on the Ska pantheon with Island Records and Trojan. ****
