Customer Reviews of Singin' in the Rain
Every Musical Lover Should Have This Movie! It's been so long since I've last seen this movie that I'm not even sure that I ever HAVE seen in its entirety before because I can't recall any of it other than of course the titular dance sequence, which has been shown numerous times in excerpts. I often tend to make the mistake that anything I see or heard for the first time IS new so it was kinda pleasantly surprising to find that most of the musical numbers were reworkings of earlier hits from the earliest talking movie era during which this film takes place. <

>Even if I did see it before in its entirety then it was a pleasure to revisit it again just two days ago. I have only a few musicals in my collection but would like to get a lot more, especially other Gene Kelly titles, perhaps even Xanadu. It's just too bad that they don't make musicals like they used to, but I guess that's probably because there either isn't enough of an audience for them anymore or else the studios just THINK that there isn't. <

>Anyway, this is one of the all-time greatest musicals (and movies, period) that any self-respecting lover of musicals shouldn't be without. Highly recommended.
Sentimental, Romantic, Ageless
"Singin' in the Rain" is the crown jewel of the MGM musicals made between 1928 and 1960. This is not a knock on the wonderful films that Fred Astaire made at MGM and other studio's, not at all, but without a doubt this one is the best synthesis of Broadway Musical and Hollywood extravaganza. Made in stunning color just in time to keep audiences away from the first wave of TV sets, Hollywood had Gene Kelly tapping down everything he knew about dance into a fun little script about the old transition from 1920's flappers and silents to the new audio age.

>It is so much fun to see the contrast between Donald O'Connor, the limber clown, and Gene Kelly the athletic man's man. Their dance is all about thrills and acrobatics, spectacular steps and synchronization. Add young Debbie Reynolds, and the effect is pure entertainment. Get up off your couch and start dancing on the dining room table. Don't scare the wife and kids.

>Much has been said about the sexy Cyd Charisse number. Her long, long, green stocking legs made the boys uncomfortable in their theatre seats. I think she was taller than Gene Kelly. The Freudian, gauze in the wind scene is all about intercourse as much as the sensibilities of 1952 could handle. It's burlesque, but ballet, or modern dance, combining at a time when Broadway was experimenting; Bob Fosse and others were choreographing the golden age of American stage musical.

A wonderful musical
I never expected Singing' in the Rain to be such a wonderful movie. For years, I was only familiar with the theme song, and out of context as one usually encounters it, I didn't really think much of it. A while ago, however, I saw a part of it on television and I liked it so much that I decided to buy the DVD.

>It is a sweet love story, as well as a film about the making of film at the crucial stage in Hollywood history when the silent movie was replaced by the talkie. Debbie Reynolds, playing the newly discovered talent Kathy Selden, is sweet, adorable, a singer with a lovely voice, and a good dancer. Jean Hagen, playing the celebrated Hollywood star Lina Lamont, is somewhat of a villain in the movie, yet extremely likable. Between them is Gene Kelly, who sings and dances superbly, which goes without saying.

>This is not only a women's movie, and it's not only about some musical numbers. It is very witty, full of subtle humour, as well as dramatizes a fascinating aspect of film history. It is also highly entertaining, and one of those movies that improve on repeated viewings.

>I wasn't crazy about all of the musical numbers, but most of them are fantastic: "You Were Meant for Me" is simply beautiful and the setting in which it is performed perfectly matches the song; "Would You" is very good, and the way in which it is used in context is very witty; "Good Morning" is cheerful and sung to a dance in which Debbie Reynolds wears a sweet blue dress and sweet blue shoes to match; "All I Do Is Dream of You" is charming; there are many others, most of them quite good, but these are the best.

>The second disc is replete with informative extras, such as a documentary about the making of musicals at MGM studios, which includes extracts from famous and not so famous movies; a new documentary about Singin' in the Rain, hosted by Debbie Reynolds, which I found very good; extracts from movies in which the songs used in this film originated, which are also extremely interesting; and song outtakes. There is also audio commentary and additional features which you can enable while watching the movie, but I'll let you discover that one by yourself.
