A downright creepy "survival horror" title, Silent Hill succeeds where most Resident Evil-inspired titles suck: keeping you hooked and instilling you with fear throughout the game. Players are cast as Harry Mason in his desperate search for his daughter, who mysteriously disappeared after their car crashed into a gully outside of a desolate resort town.

The 3-D environments in Silent Hill are bathed in fog or darkness, making its dismal setting all the more eerie; this also allows for some spectacular lighting effects when using a flashlight in the dark. Granted, there are some pretty coarse graphics being obscured here, but it's a fair trade-off, considering the game's short load times.

Silent Hill is played from a third-person perspective, viewed from both fixed and moving camera angles. As with similar games, the viewpoint can be awkward at times, especially during combat, which here is so clunky that you should try to avoid it whenever possible--something you should do anyway, as this isn't Tomb Raider.

Rather than resort to cheap scare tactics, Silent Hill features a gameplay twist that works very well with its limited visibility environments. Harry carries a radio with him that crackles with static whenever the game's nasties are near, and continues until they're no longer in the vicinity or have been killed off. (Enemies may require further whacking when they're down, as they like to play dead.) Additionally, the supported Dual-Shock controller pulsates in a heartbeatlike fashion whenever you're moderately or seriously injured. --Joe Hon

Customer Reviews of Silent Hill

The most terrifying game ever created!
Many people loved Resident Evil because it is a scary game. I agree with all of them, but until you've played Silent Hill, you haven't played an actual SCARY game. From the second you start the game you feel uneasy and like something is wrong The fact that you can only see a few feet in front of yourself because of the darkness or the thick fog only increases this effect. Every where you go is deserted , except for the horrible creatures running around town. If the town really is deserted , then where are those horrible sounds coming from? These are just a few of the things that are going through your head as you play this game. Then, when you feal like you've finally got ahold of yourself, and you think you can handle the game, what's that ? A siren goes off, and the town you were just in turns into a horrible dark evil version of the town with extremely creepy music. Let me tell you something right now, if you every play this game , don't play it on the second floor of you house at 1 in the morning, with all the lights off with only your terrified younger brother there to protect you. And if you do, just hope you don't have to go to the bathroom, because it's a long walk downstairs in the dark , trust me I know!

Creepy- just creepy...
Silent Hill is a game based on fear. The fear of losing your child, the fear of being alone in an empty town where the streets are made of metal grating, the fear of darkness and death.

Silent Hill drew comparisons to Resident Evil, and while I can understand this, I feel that Resident Evil was centered primarily on action, while Silent Hill was centered on fear. It depends on what you like. If you like lots of guns and shooting, you won't find it here.

What you will find is one of the best (if not wholly original) stories ever to grace a video game. Play it with the lights off. It grates your nerves to pulp that way.

If you like horror movies, and I mean the SCARY ones, you are in for quite a ride with this one. You'll find yourself alone at night in an abandoned school full of mutilated children chasing you with knives. You see a nurse, Lisa, from a hospital, while she cries blood because she's "one of them..."

Add to this the hauntingly beautiful (and sometimes crazy) music, and it all becomes one big, scary expierience. Let yourself get involved with the charcters and be chilled by it- it's not something you'll forget, and one of the best gaming events I've ever seen- but only if you prefer scares and story, as opposed to shooting and bad voice-overs.

Have fun, let the heartpounding begin.

still freaky after all these years
just went back to dust off my copy of silent hill that i beat many moons ago... playing it now at first i was taken aback at how chunky the graphics were. this wasn't how i remembered it. the silent hill i remembered was vivid, disturbing, and insomnia inducing. it was a town i went to visit but wouldn't like to stay in.

now i noticed the repeating textures and areas. the pixelated gradients in the shading. and of course the famous annoying controlls that had me cursing at the damn pink pteridactyl swooping onto my head again.

but by the time i got to the school i'd assimilated myself, i was back in silent hill. now i'll probably stay till the end of the game.

there are so many thoughtfull details that absorb you and take you to another (very scary) place. the dated graphics don't matter. this is a classic!
