Customer Reviews of Show Off!: A Kid's Guide to Being Cool
More Than Louise Brooks To "Show Off" THE SHOW OFF is one of those films that impresses simply by its lack of size. When most people think of silent films, its either comedies or big spectacles like BEN-HUR or INTOLERANCE that come to mind. Yet there are many other films that can be enjoyed simply for what they are and this is one of them. To judge from Louise Brooks' prominent picture on the front, this video was released to cash in on her popularity but the film belongs to Ford Sterling. He began his career as a circus clown before breaking into movies with Mack Sennett as one of the Keystone Kops. This would serve him in good stead later when he played a clown in the Lon Chaney vehicle HE WHO GETS SLAPPED. In THE SHOW OFF he plays an insufferable braggart who causes nothing but trouble for the people he knows. His physical appearance and mannerisms bring to mind Dan Ackroyd. It's a masterful portrayal. We all know or have met people like his Aubrey Piper and wish we hadn't. Lois Wilson (THE COVERED WAGON) plays his supportive but long suffering wife while Louise Brooks makes the most of her part as the girl next door. While it's a small part, there's no mistaking her presence. She plays THE key role in the film for it is she who puts the obnoxious Aubrey in his place. The film was shot on location in Philadelphia and the shots of the city circa 1926 are an added bonus. The print from Kino On Video is great (as usual) and the musical accompaniment by Timothy Brock complements the film nicely. An underated little gem.
Enter Louise Brooks
It's hard not to give a movie with Louise Brooks 5 stars, but this just isn't her best vehicle. In fact she only has a supporting role. But anything with Louise's smile is worth watching. If you don't own Pandoria's Box get it first, this is masterpiece. Other Louise Brooks are hard to find but can be worth the effort. Beggar's of Life is a point in example. Nut if you have Pandor's Box get this, it's worth it.
Louise Brooks makes the film
This is an other good film to add to your LuLu collection. The title tells it all. A show off (Audrey Piper) misleads and misdeeds a family into ruin.
This 82-minuet film is backed up with a violin and piano score, directed and compiled by Timothy Brock. Timothy Brock is a composer of concert hall and film music, and the conductor/music director of the Olympia Chamber Orchestra in Olympia, Washington, USA.
