Customer Reviews of Shangri-La Dee Da
STP get more consistent... with their fifth album, Shangri-La Dee Da.
... STP are proving that they have matured from the last album, No. 4, and have gotten less disjointed. Also, the louder songs are much better on Shangri. The Beatlesques have improved as well, and that's what makes it their best work since Core and Purple.
The lyrical content is the best thing about this one. "Dumb Love" is on past mistakes and kind of modernizes the Core days. It's got a great solo, and is very short.
My only complaint is that "Days of the Week" should have been left off as a B-side, since it really doesn't fit the album. (If it were on Tiny Music though, I'd rave about it). It's got a great interlude part, but lacks the lyrical content of the rest of the album.
No kidding "Coma" rocks!!! That song is epic. The beginning parts sound like guitars, but are really samples of a vocal melody Scott came up with being chopped. The bass and the guitar solo are the best things about this. If it were the future of rock, rock would really rock!
"Hollywood B!tch" is a very true song. It's also got a solid melody and classic guitars that will make you remember "Big Bang Baby" and "Pop's Love Suicide". It is also less than three minutes, but still very good. Everyone who likes STP at all should like this song. A deserving hit!
"Wonderful" is a classic ballad. If you really think those ballads out today have meaning, you never listened to "Wonderful". It's a Beatlesque, raw and original, and has parts that don't actually sound like Scott. This sounds like nothing STP have ever done, and you'll love the melody as well.
"Black Again" has excellent guitars in it. I like the chorus especially. This one is another Beatlesque, and it shines, as well as its lyrics. If you have not listened to the lyrics, then that's why I haven't described them.
"Hello It's Late" is space-rock-like, the closest to that STP have ever gotten. This one also will win you over if you like melodic songs.
"Too Cool Queenie" is probably about Kurt Cobain and Courney Love, as it seems the lyrics suggest when it says "she said he could do no right/so he took his life/this story is true". This isn't really grunge, but I like the feel to this one. It also suggests "It's alright 'cuz what goes around comes around" before its electric guitar solo.
"Regeneration" is the angry song on here. I love it. It reminds me of "Vaseline" and is actually a little better. It shows how good Scott could be when he's "clean" and still making songs like this. On this one, rocking out worked perfect. However, Scott's vocals are different than usual.
"Bi-Polar Bear" may be the opposite of the song it precedes. This one is more acoustic-like and is about the way Scott's bi-polar. Once again, Robert and Dean Deleo do good on the guitars. The end is sort of interesting even though it's just a little thing.
"Transmissions From A Lonely Room" is the song that I could not stop repeating when I heard the album. There is nothing to hate about this song. It's riffs are perfect, and it kind of reminds you of the '70s at points. This one will get repeat listens.
You think that "With Arms Wide Open" is meaningful? Listen to Weiland make a song about his son Noah, and you'll be moved, with "A Song For Sleeping", which is has a perfect melody and is a laid-back tune here. Great for relaxing.
On "Long Way Home", Scott sounds like Kurt Cobain on the verses, though it sounds Beatlesque on the chorus. I repeat this one quite a bit, too.
Death of STP? No! Some will say that there's a reason grunge is dead, but they weren't the pioneers of the genre or anything. If you call them corporate rock for ripping off Pearl Jam, you obviously never heard this or anything post-Core. It's worth every penny. When you hear music and lyrics this good, I have no way I can hate it, and will always speak for this album, as I would STP as a band. If this is their direction, they should never break up (as the direction of their other 4 albums as well).
Most Creative Album Yet!
But they are still underrated. Why? Because I guess people are still looking for "Core #2", which this is not. I guess some people rather that they sound like Creed or Godsmack in every album doing the same dull sound over and over. Don't get me wrong. Core and Purple are among my favorite albums of all times because I grew up on them and hold them now as classics, but "Shangri-La Dee Da" has a more creative sound.
You can tell that the band has grown a lot since "Core" if you have heard their earlier stuff. I've been collecting STP since they released "Core", and I am not disappointed in any of their albums. It took me a while to get used to "Tiny Music", but I started loving them more for it. And now they experiment farther with their sound on "Shangri-La Dee Da".
The first four songs are typical STP. Core fans will love 'Dumb Love' while I think that 'Days of the Week' is quite comparable to songs like 'Interstate Love Song'. Their next four songs hits their softer side of rock starting with a more emotional side of Scott with 'Wonderful'. Then it goes into a side I have never heard STP do with 'Regeneration' and 'Bi-Polar Bear' that has a fast paced dreamy and spacey sound that I can't get out of my head. They also mix in some acoustics in these songs ending with 'Long Way Home'.
This album has a great mixture of everything from a band who is not afraid to experiment, and that is why I think they are one of the best Rock N' Roll bands out today.
Interesting cd
New Rock and roll at its finest. At times much more easily listenable than their debut album "Core". But then again, thats when they were classified as "Grunge" This cd at times sounds alittle like "Core" especially the tracks "long way home" and "Dumb love". Heavy drum beats and guitars and Scotts pleading lyrics. The bass lines are pretty cool as well. The drum work is just as incredible.
"C oma" sounds like it should've been on "4" but it works well here as well.
"Too cool queenie" lyrically sounds like they're talking about Courtney you know who. Certainly not recyclable material from previous outings, but rather a recessive progression.
"Hello its late" brings back a feeling of "70's rock. All in All, if ya like STP, you will like Shrangri la dee da.
