The beauty of serial experiments lain is the deliberate pace at which the story unfolds. Director Ryutaro Nakamura eschews the hyperkinetic style of many anime, allowing the plot to develop in slow motion and making every single image count. The first episode (a total of four are included) is a masterpiece of shifting moods and slowly building tension. Every detail--from the strange blotchy shadows to the ever-present hum of power lines to the slow tracking shots across the dazed face of Lain herself--helps create an atmosphere of unease, and as the truth is gradually revealed, that unease is amply justified. The art direction is superb, mixing computer graphics with traditional animation and making frequent use of high-contrast images that set deep shadows against a blinding white sky. The first four episodes of serial experiments lain combine the millennial dread of Neon Genesis Evangelion with the subtle menace of The X-Files to create a uniquely disturbing beginning to an imaginative and intelligent story. Stay tuned. --Simon Leake

Customer Reviews of Serial Experiments - Lain: Navi (Layers 1-4)
Slow to unfold, very good anime, very artistic. This was my first purchase of an anime video and I wasn't disappointed. I'm still a little confused about it. I came to assume, as I was watching it, that each "layer" was basically an episode of a series. I wonder if it was aired on Japanese television. Well, the summaries that are given for this title, I'm sure, sum the main events all up. There's not much going on in terms of actual happenings. It is quite slow and long, but not bad because of it. I really liked the slow scenes of maybe just Lain walking down some stairs outside. The quality of the anime, its style and air of distinction, that it was more sophisticated than most anime, made me want to see what happens. Although I haven't seen much anime, there is an obvious difference. "Navi" is hard to understand, it uses the term "the Wired" which remains ambiguous. "the Wired" seemed like an extremely imaginative, eerie version of the internet. I have a real respect for the pace at which it unvails and its dark style. Having only seen this one tape in the series (I assume there will be more) I am left with more questions than answers about just who the hell Lain is and what she was doing, what all that stuff was ("the Wired" etc.) I liked it, but wouldn't recommend it for someone looking for humor, violence, nudity, or action. It seemed to have the makings of a compelling plot and I loved the way that it was unique, stylized, because parts of it seemed neurotic and only meant for effect instead of affecting the storyline. Very good, if slow.
Strange & Creepy, not an Anime for the Conventional Viewers
Lain is so different from everything I've seen, Anime or not, it's hard to explain it and even more difficult understanding it. I've watched all 13 episodes and I'm utterly confused. Nothing in Lain is clearly defined and the story only gets stranger with each episode. In the end nothing much is explained and it's up to you (the viewer) to tie up the loose ends and draw your own conclusion.
The Lain series was done with a limited budget and aired at 1:00am in Japan. It definitely has that low-budget, late-night, creepy, strange, horror shows feel. It has some excellent graphics, but those frames are re-used quite often during the course of the series. If you watch this show for the animation, you'll be disappointed. If you like clear-cut explanation of plot twist you'll not get them here. If you like fast-moving rapid-fire anime with sharp dialogs then look elsewhere. Lain is slow, it's strange, it's creepy and it leaves itself open for all sorts of interpretations. It's one of those shows that you'll either love to death or hate with all your heart. I've watched it once, and I'll watch it again just to be sure I don't like it as much as I think I do. If that last statement make sense to you, than maybe Lain is your cup of tea.
Disappointed
I had high hopes for an interesting and different film, but I was disappointed. It is different, but unfortunately boring. There are some aspects to the artwork that are unique (shadows have fun treatments) but thats about it. Otherwise, the artwork is a let down. The eyes on the main character (Lain) were a window to nothing and she really wasn't endearing. It was very slow and not a "ghost story". Maybe the next few layers get more excitng, but I'm sure the anime doesn't get better.
