Customer Reviews of Self-Contained
Yes' First Guitarist Shows He Still Has It! I picked up SELF-CONTAINED because I was curious of what Yes' first guitars was capable of as a solo artist. With Steve Howe clearly considered Yes' definitive guitarist and Trevor Rabin as the one who kept Yes alive in the eighties, I wondered what Banks' contribution to the world of Yes was.
The first two Yes albums are good, but the band was still trying to get their sound solidified. TIME AND A WORD made the mistake, in my opinion, of adding an orchestra. However, based on those two albums, I have to wonder why Yes dumped Banks. This isn't intended as a disrespect to Steve Howe (who inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place), but to acknowledge Banks' contribution to the sound of Yes. He provides some excellent guitar work on both albums and truly shines on the Yes BBC RECORDINGS collection.
After listening to SELF-CONTAINED, I have to ask that question even more so! Here Banks pulls out all of the stops and delivers an album that is surprisingly modern sounding. As a matter of fact, Banks' album sound similar to some of Steve Vai's solo work. There's even a little shredding in the mix. For those who enjoy guitar instrumental albums, I recommend this album highly.
