To use the SmartPad, simply start writing on the included plain-paper notepad with the SmartPen ballpoint. The SmartPad pen transmits your written notes to the SmartPad transmitter, which then sends the information to your Palm handheld via its infrared port. Use the enhanced SmartPad Palm applications to save your notes, drawings, and maps in any of the four major Palm applications. Notes are saved as either BMP or GIF image files at a resolution of up to 72 dpi. The SmartPad pen can be used both as a ballpoint and as a stylus for your Palm handheld.
The SmartPad is compatible with Palm III or later Palm handhelds and other handhelds using Palm OS 3.1 or higher. It is not compatible with upgraded older Palms or Palm Pros. It requires an IBM-compatible Pentium or equivalent running Windows 95 or later with 16 MB or more memory and 16 MB of hard drive space.
The SmartPad comes with the SmartPad zippered portfolio, two AAA batteries for powering the SmartPad transmitter, SmartPen with one AAAA battery installed, a SmartPen refill cartridge with five refills, user manual, software for PC and Palm on CD-ROM, and two standard 5-by-8-inch ruled paper pads.

Customer Reviews of Seiko SmartPad Connected Notepad
Good but only for Palm devises It works great right out of the box, except I have to turn my handspring Visor because the IR signal has to be facing the IR on top of the portfolio case. Other than that the drawings are accurate and are easily transfered to PC.
Handwriting recognition for the Seiko Smartpad 2
I purchased the Seiko Smartpad 2 knowing full-well that it didn't officially support handwriting recognition. However, I was aware that there were 'work-arounds' for utilizing the handwriting recognition tools in Microsoft Word to compensate for the lack of the functionality in the Smartpad software.
However, sadly, I was disappointed. You are not able to import any files using the MS Handwriting Recognition functionality (at least I couldn't figure out how, even after I called MS). So, The way that I tried to do this was:
- Create the file on my PDA (which is a Palm 5 - OS 3.3)
- HotSync with the Smartpad desktop application so that the file was transferred to my PC (my desktop OS is Windows XP)
- I then saved the file as one of the two available formats (either .bmp or .gif - no other options are available).
- I then had to open the file in either MS Paint or MS Photo Editor and resave it as a .tif file so that MS Document Imaging could read it (MS Doc Imaging only opens .tif files).
- I then ran the "Recognize Text Using OCR" function (sometimes it failed when it couldn't recognize the text)
- Finally, I selected the "Send Text to Word" function.
The result was very, disappointing. No matter how neatly I wrote, it never got any of the text right. I even tried typing in Word using the comic sans font, saving the text as a picture, and repeating the above process. The result was the same.
When I called Microsoft, the tech support person said that he knew of no way to do this. This is contrary to some of the reviews I have read by purchasers of the product, including one review on Amazon.

I love it, not a bad price either.
I don't have this exact same version, I have the Smartpad 2. It is great. The qwerty keyboard on the pad makes it even better. Most people are giving it bad reviews because of incompatability. You can go to [the website] to download an update so that it can work with your PDA. Also people are unhappy about it only storing images. Dang, some people are just so stupid. It says on the package that it will ONLY STORE IMAGES and nothing more. So before you go and make a bad review, read the package first. Also I had one major issue, before I bought this. I thought that it would be too big, but to tell you the truth, I thought it was going to be much bigger. The leather case is great. The pen is ok, not great, but it will do the job. Also I like the twist down IR. I have a handspring, palm 5, and a ipaq. I can use the ipaq and the palm when the twist ir is up, and the handspring when it is down. The newer version of this costs [more]. I would shell the extra 50 and go with that one. THe keyboard under the pad helps a lot. Also It has a cell phone holder!!! I was considering not getting this after all the bad reviews. But all the bad reviews said were incompatability, and people who didn't read and thought that it had hand recognition. So I went for it, and I am extremely happy. If you need it for handrecognition, you can get ocr software and it will work, otherwise if you need it just to keep track of your notes, this will definitley do the job.
Pros:
*Nice Leather Case
*Keyboard
*Cell Holder (may not be a big deal to others, but it is very useful)
*Size
*The ability to store all your notes on your PDA or computer.
Cons:
*Pen is "bouncy"
*Leather tends to get dirty, but nothing that a wet cloth can't fix
*It would be nice to have handrecognition, but not neccessary.
Hope that helped
