Customer Reviews of Second Story
Another incredible album from The Hang Ups With the departure of John Crozier and a new bass player added to the mix (Aaron Lundholm) it only makes sense that the sound of the band would change. While maintaining the sweet meloncholy pop that made them cult gods they've turned themselves into a Kinks(ish) Pop/Rock band... The melodies are even more catchy than ever and the harmonies are sublime (thanks to Mr. Ittner in the studio)... Excellent album.
Even Better
I've been a fan of the Hang-Ups from pretty much the beginning. I've always felt that their CDs don't hold up to their live shows. But that changes with Second Story. Don Dixon and Mitch Easter do a great job refining their soulful, melodic sound, but they've also added the punch from live shows that previous studio efforts missed. I can recite the same old comparisons to pop icons like the Kinks, Byrds and Paul Simon, but the best advice I can give is to get to their web site, find out when they're coming to your town and get yourself to the show. Or at least buy this CD. It's one of the best I heard in '99.
Not up to expectations
I was a little disappointed at this effort. So We Go was one of my all-time faves. I should have known they couldnt repeat it without the guitar playing of John Crozier. Second Story is more folky sounding, lacking the lovely, fuzzy distortion atmospherics and understated production quality of So We Go. Still, this is tasty pop confection served with a few tangy twists. Absolutely worth checking out.
