When they returned to America to look for more funding, the fossils were displayed at the Museum of Natural History, and America went crazy for dinosaurs. Andrews's next trip was plagued with difficulties: Outer Mongolia charged the Americans with stealing millions of dollars worth of fossils and did not want to issue permits; bandits abounded, and Andrews had achieved his reputation as an intrepid explorer but lost both his eyesight and his happy marriage. Eventually thrown out by China, Andrews returned to a Depression-era New York that could no longer fund vast expeditions. It marked the end of an era. This video will appeal strongly to dinosaur fans and armchair explorers alike, but the true target audience is much wider: Shakelford's remarkable and extremely rare film footage of 1920s Mongolia (including a spectacular Buddhist festival in Urga) is the real treasure of The Dragon Hunters. --Tara Chace

Customer Reviews of Searching for Lost Worlds: Dragon Hunters: Secrets of the Gobi Desert
Roy Chapman Andrews, the Real Indiana Jones This is a fascinating documentary. You will find yourself glued to your seat as you watch Roy Chapman Andrews, the charismatic explorer (some say the character Indiana Jones was based on him), do everything in his power to study and claim magnificent dinosaur bones in the Gobi. There is actual footage from the 1920's as well as re-enactments in this superbly assembled documentary. The video adds wonderful insight into the American Museum of Natural History in its early days...going back to the time of President Teddy Roosevelt, who played a part in the museum's founding. The video also recounts Mongolian and Chinese history of this time. Many of these little known facts serve as a good background for what happened in China later with the advent of the communists and Mongolia's emergence as an independent nation. This documentary presents "Indiana Jones" for the person who wants to be informed as well as entertained.
