Customer Reviews of Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1 - 4
Outgoing With No Apologies In the 1960's the CBS/Columbia catalogue (now SONY Classics) was graced by two very fine sets of Schumann symphonies, one by Szell and this other by Bernstein. While we tend to associate Bernstein with Mahler and the composers of the early 20th Century he also had a very fine feel for Haydn and Schumann.
In the wrong hands Schumann can be turned into a plodding bore. Far too many performances seem to have no faith in the music and dutifully move forward with no purpose with the orchestration often coming off a bit thick. First of all Bernstein knows these are great works that need no apologies. With a clear ear for detail and a fine sense of where these works are going he gives us very outgoing performances. The scherzos tingle and the adagios move the listener. Bernstein may take the great second movement of the 2nd Symphony with an eye towards Mahler but it does no harm to it and why not. After all Mahler greatly admired Schumann even producing his own edition of the symphonies. The 1960's sound is quite good. These are an issue by SONY France and notes are in French only.
