Customer Reviews of Scarecrow
Rain On The Scarecrow, Blood On The Plow Scarecrow is an awesome CD. Although his CDs before this were awesome this was his first that actually stuck to a distinctive style. It also was his best written album up to that point.
Rain On The Scarecrow- Best on album No questions asked.
Grandma's Theme- Sung by John's grandmother, Laura Mellencamp. I usually skip this one. It is an American folk song. I don't think John took his singing after her.
Small Town- One of John's best songs.
Minutes To Memories- About meeting an old man on a Greyhound bus who told him his life story.
Lonely Ol' Night- Great
The Face Of The Nation- About not recognizing America anymore
Justice And Independence '85- About Jusice and Independence having a son called nation. I love the part that says 'they couldn't keep the boy at home' because it reminds me of George Bush sending troops to other countries to get oil.
Between A Laugh And A Tear- Awesome song. Check out the remake of it on John's Rough Harvest album
Rumbleseat- Great rocker
You've Got To Stand For Somethin'- Talking about what he has seen
R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. (A Salute To 60's Rock)- A salute to his influences
The Kind Of Fella I Am- A bnus track for the cd
Songs From The Midland
Scarecrow is the most politically charged album of John Cougar Mellencamp's career. "Rain On The Scarecrow" is about the plight small farmers face. His compassion for the farmers led him to start Farm Aid with Willie Nelson & Neil Young. "Justice & Independence '85", "Face Of A Nation" & "You Got To Stand For Something" all take a social commentary slant. The album is also ripe with down home tales from Mr. Mellencamp's life. "Small Town" was a huge hit and tells of the little Indiana hometown, "Minutes To Memories" is about an old man he meets on a bus and "Rumbleseat" is about being young and in love. "Lonely 'Ol Night" sounds like it could have been released in 1967. "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." is a tribute to the sounds and groups he grew up with and is a great song. Scarecrow spent half a year in the top ten, spawned three top ten hits and made Mr. Mellencamp the Midwest answer to Bruce Springsteen.
At His Best
This is (Most Likely) Mellencamp's best album. "Uh-Huh" and "American Fool" are very good as well and everyone should have all three, but start here first.
