Quaid is Joshua Rose, an American in Paris traumatized by the death of his wife and child in an Islamic terrorist bombing, wreaking immediate and fateful vengeance on innocent Muslim worshippers, then escaping into a new life as a mercenary supporting Bosnian Serbs. Under the nom du guerre Guy, Rose is a remorseless, nearly comatose presence until he intervenes in a brutal attack on a Serbian woman (Natasa Ninkovic) pregnant from a Muslim rape. Guy's gradual immersion in his charge's destiny brings him face to face with the centuries-old political, religious, and cultural feuds that haunt the region, and Quaid's own salvation comes through a remarkably subdued, sober performance. That restraint, and Quaid's haggard, close-cropped features are all but unrecognizable to those more familiar with his cocky, grinning turns as a more conventional hero.
Antonijevic makes the journey absorbing and, ultimately, elegiac, punctuated by a few brief but convincingly gruesome action sequences including a civilian massacre that would have been the climax of a more conventional war film. Instead, it's Quaid's own epiphanies that distinguish this probing, heartbreaking drama. The DVD edition retains the original widescreen aspect ratio and includes an audio commentary from the director. --Sam Sutherland.

Customer Reviews of Savior (1998)
Jeramy One of the most amazing films I have ever seen on the Bosnian Conflict. People have been complaining of it being Pro Serb, and making them look like the good guys. I assure you they are not portraid as your hollywood Hero Stars. (I'm really not sure HOW people can think this is COMPLETELY one sided) This is a very sureal movie, depicting what it is like in war. There are two sides to every fight. Amazing and emotional. People must get their facts straight before bashing this movie. Amazing and must see!
A Powerful Film about Revenge and Redemption
This movie didn't receive much attention when it came out in 1998, but hopefully it'll get more attention when people realize what a truly good film it is. Dennis Quaid has perhaps his finest role as a man whose wife and son were killed by Muslim terrorists in a bombing. He then makes it his mission in life to exact as much revenge as possible. Therefore he joins the fighting in Bosnia in order to kill Muslim Serbs. The opening scene of the film is startling. It has Quaid sighting a Muslim boy with his rifle, taking a drag on his cigarette, and calmly killing him in cold blood. Revenge has turned him into a hollow man, dead on the inside. Eventually, though, he does find a chance for redemption in the form of a pregnant girl who has been raped by her Muslim captor. Her family won't take her back because they consider "tainted." So Quaid has to bring her to a UN post where she'll be safe. Along the way, they witness some truly horrifying atrocities on both sides. This is not an easy film to watch, but it's worth it. By the end of the movie, Quaid has found redemption and has let go of his desire for revenge, at the same time becoming the "savior" for the woman and her child. Putting politics aside, this is a marvelous film about revenge, forgiveness and redemption that never gets preachy. A powerful film!
Stick with this past the first 15 minutes
This film improves immeasurably once it gets past the rather clunky, far-fetched scenes that explain how Quaid's character ends up in Bosnia. It depicts (for once) Serbs, Bosnians, and Croats as equal victims and perpetrators of the 1991-95 war, rather than blaming the evil Serbs for everything per orders of NATO and the Soros Foundation. If that sounds like "Serbian propaganda" to you, buy Behind Enemy Lines instead; Savior will not satisfy your simple-minded action film fix.
