Customer Reviews of Savage
The best from the Eurythmics One of the best albums to come from the 1980s, "Savage" is more than just a great collection of songs showcasing the talents of both Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. If you listen from it's first song "Beethoven (I Love To)" to the uplifting, gospel-flavored "A Brand New Day" finale, the album tells the story of a relationship gone wrong and the woman who puts her life back together. Filled with the synth-pop that the Euythmics are known for ("Do You Want to Break Up?," "Shame," "Heaven") and a few different sytles (the vamp-rock feel of "I Need a Man" and the acoutic guitars of "I Need You") and all featuring Lennox's wonderful voice, this album offers the best of the duo.
Underrated.
Having dabbled with rock on previous albums, Dave and Annie return to their synth pop roots on the slept-on "Savage," which is my favorite album of their catalogue. Annie Lennox runs the gamut of emotions on this stellar release: anger, frustration, infatuation, resentment, and other feelings associated with a relationship that's about to collapse. In "Do You Want to Break Up," a catchy, bubblegum chorus belies the song's heartbreaking lyrics. She blows her pipes to the fullest extent on the single "You Have Placed a Chill (in My Heart)," and cruises through the masochist lyrics of the acoustic gem "I Need You." But my favorite track is the gusty drive of "I Need a Man," in which Lennox screams throughout the track with enough verve and spunk to rival Mick Jagger. Like most good albums, this one fell through the cracks and underperformed on the charts, which is too bad, because "Savage" has some of the duo's best work. It may be too schizophrenic for some tastes, but it's a wild and fun ride that begs for a second chance.
All the 5-star reviews explain it all...
This is definately the Eurythmics finest hour. Every song on here has a special meaning to me. My top favorites have to be "I've Got A Lover (Back In Japan)", "You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart" and "Shame". I also recommened seeking out the Savage video which basically turns all the songs into a storyline (which really needs to be released on DVD). Check this out with an open mind...
