Customer Reviews of Safety 1st Swing n' Lock Gate
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly We've used this as a pressure mounted gate for my two boys over the last 4 years. The good - properly adjusted and installed, it keeps the baby in (or out as the case may be). The bad - unless they have a strong hand grip, young children (such as my 4 and 8 yr old) and the elderly (my parents) cannot open and close this gate, resulting in a lot of inconvience. Also, the adjustment tends to get loose over time so that you have to reset it. The ugly - makes the walls ugly by tearing up the paint and drywall. The gate itself is ugly on the "unfinished" side, and that plastic picks up a great deal of unattractive scratches over time. And the really ugly is the bruises and boo-boos from where the gate has fallen on the kids when not properly put back up after being opened and/or is not put back up at all because of the hassle. I have no trouble opening it one-handed, but reinstalling it one-handed is not possible for me. Overall, it's sturdy. It works. But if you want a good pressure mounted gate I'd look for something else.
Glad I didn't buy this for a baby
This gate was a pain in the neck to install and get the right tension to close it tight. Then you have to hold it up to get the right tension to get a tight closure. My dogs (miniature Dachshunds) were able to push it opened, a baby would be seriously hurt because of product failure. Now after only a year and a half the lock handle broke inside so it can't even be fixed. I have to buy a new gate now.
JUNK!
I got this the other day w/o reading reviews first. Big mistake! Before I put it in I read the reviews and thought I'll install it right, no problems-WRONG! First, I couldn't get the gate to be perfectly even on top and bottom, the top was pulled out farther, no matter how much I pulled the bottom wouldn't budge. I'd lock the top and get it perfect, I tried hammering the bottom in place but it wouldn't move. Because of that I couldn't get 4 points of contact and didn't bother fussing with it and took it back. If you have perfectly level and plumb walls and can get this gate to be pulled out evenly than it might work. Also the handle was hard to operate. If you push down on the handle and use the thumb release it worked. I replaced this gate w/ the Evenflow Walkthru wooden gate. I love that gate!
