Customer Reviews of Sacred Hymns
Inhabiting the Essence The authoritative document of Gurdjieff's piano music must certainly be the 3CD compilation with co-composer deHartmann at the piano. Nevertheless, Jarrett's recording, featuring a round of the more stately short pieces of Mr. G.'s cannon, is refreshingly understated, rendered in the shimmering ECM sound. Jarrett "fans" will be confused by the deliberate absence of discernable Jarrett personality traits, but that is almost the point it seems. Those intrigued should hunt down the out-of-print recording "Journeys to Inaccessible Places" performed by pianist Elan Sicroff and produced by Robert Fripp (Editions EG,mid '80's).
Jarrett - Sacred Hymns
Checked this one out a bunch of times and in different moods. Really wanted to give it a chance after hearing some good things about it, but found it to be extremly dull and uninteresting each time. Oh well. Am still a Jarrett fan.
Jarrett Superb in Rough Territory
I don't know exactly how many pianists there are in the world - probably several million? Of these, only a tiny number could have pulled this recording off, and none better than Keith Jarrett, one of the finest pianists we have working in any genre or idiom. This isn't jazz at all, but rather piano transcriptions of one man's memories of central Asian Christian music. The transcriptions are not artful, but this doesn't stop them from shining like uncut gems. If you can connect with these minor melodies, then you'll find this recording exceptionally beautiful, as I do.
