Customer Reviews of Russkaia Zhizn = Russian Life
My Mistake... True story: during a recent lunch break, a coworker was stymied by a cross-word puzzle: "What's a three-letter word, ending in E, for a 'rebel leader'?" With total confidence, I supplied, "Che." Well, the answer turned out to be "Lee"! Which brings me to another recent mistake, my subscription to Russkaya Zhizn'. This Russian-language newspaper is advertised on the same Amazon page as "Russian Life", the English-language magazine by the identical name. But take note: the two publications are not related nor in any manner similar! Russian Life Magazine features apolitical, human-interest stories, such as "Feline Guardians of the Hermitage" and "A Visit to Tatarstan", accompanied by color pictures on 70 glossy pages. Russkaya Zhizn' is a 12-page weekly political newspaper with no illustration at all -- and nothing about "Russian life" either. Its subtitle, "stareishaya russkaya natsionalisticheskaya antikommunisticheskaya gazeta zarubezh'ya" really says it all: "oldest Russian Nationalist antiCommunist foreign newspaper", published in San Francisco since 1921. These days, there's not much Communism in the ex-Soviet ex-Union to rail against, but the gazette is seemingly anti-just about everything else; you name it, antiKremlin, antiWestern, antiZionist... Its sponsors are all Bay Area Orthodox Christian churches. As if I didn't already get enough religio-political propaganda from my local English-language daily, the Union Tribune, aka the "GOP Pravda"! I considered cancelling my subscription to Russkaya Zhizn'. But Russian Nationalism and isolationalism are growing under the bellicose leadership of Vladimir Zhirinovski, the Duma's equivalent of Patrick Buchanon. Just because I disagree with the rightwing political slant doesn't mean I can't learn anything useful from Russkaya Zhizn'. So I'll continue reading it, but I'll warn prospective Amazon customers NOT to confuse it, as I did, with the delightful bi-monthly "Russian Life". Regardless of your position on Russian politics, you'll find very little entertainment in Russkaya Zhizn'. But at least there is a cross-word puzzle in every issue!
