The concert alone pushes three hours, and disc 2 offers a lengthy documentary and multi-angle options for three songs. The Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 sound quality is generally good, if overly compressed. Peart's drums sound fabulous, in fact: splashy and tight and far more natural than they've sounded on any Rush album, live or otherwise, in years. Not to be missed--and needlessly hard to find--is a 1975 promotional clip for Fly by Night's "Anthem." This set is a must, even for the doubtful. --Michael Mikesell

Customer Reviews of Rush - Rush in Rio
special night O.K. People, read with me, THIS DVD SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO SOUND.Don't you people read?(I'm refering to Neil's liner notes, of course.)The sound was tweaked as little as possible and the crowd noise was intentionaly left in.The sound isn't "THE CHEAP SEATS",it's 40,000 screaming maniacs who are experiencing Rush live for the first time, EVER!!What happened those 3 nights was incredibly special,as much for the band as it was for those kids. I thought the DVD captured that feeling perfectly.
I CANNOT BELIEVE that I actually read here the words 'RUSH' and 'THEY SOLD OUT' in the same sentence, and the person wasn't talking about a concert sellout. This coming from a guy who claims he "knows this band inside out,so don't argue with" him.
Pal,if you knew the band so well, you'd know that they don't 'market' their music towards anybody, except themselves. Not kids, not gen-Xers,not baby boomers, nobody. They make music for themselves and if someone else likes it,that's just icing on the cake.
People, if you are a 'TRUE' Rush fan,and want to get some goose bumps, and remember what it felt to see the spectacle of Rush for the very first time,(I still remember that feeling 22 years ago),buy this DVD.
A very real look for fans
After waiting almost what seems forever, I was thrilled to play this dvd from my favorite band-and almost played it to death. After reading some of the other reviews, I thought it time to do a comparison of sound and played "A Show of Hands" on VHS which is a decade old and "Different Stages Live" . Yes, these do sound a bit clearer and you can definately hear better instrument separation-there isn't that wall of sound with extra bass lines that the band has become fond of. Geddy said in his CNN interview that they are running up to three bass lines on there more recent songs.
Be that as it may, I love it all and youthful enthusiasm has been replaced with the depth of maturity. Listen to the playing! Natural Science and Neil's solo are worth the price of admission alone. Thumbs up-buy it! And enjoy the crowd and the sense of being there.
Its too bad Alex couldn't show a little bit of that "depth of maturity" and restraint on New Years. Now another crisis has hit the band on the verge of a World Tour.
its OK Alex we don`t like guitar solos anymore
The Truth is Rush are no longer very much to speak of. Lifeson has never been a brilliant guitarist and probably the weakest link in the chain (compare his playing to romeo or petruci and poor alex sounds well ? less than awake ) Geddy`s a brilliant bass player but his voice isn`t worth writing home about , Peart is the guy he is pretty much the reason why Rush become so strong in the first place, his drum work once was cutting edge slick and a moving force that the band name would suggest. Pearts still a good drummer but the likes portnoy (dreamtheater) or zondor(fates warning) and bozzio(zappa, various magna carta`s, vai, others) would blow him out the water. I wish this band would basicaly give up this DVD and Vapor Trials convince me that they are no longer who they claim to be but rather a shadow of their former glory. No Band around today are as powerful musicaly or even in song writing as rush were up untill signals , but sadly when peart penned the song loosing it, Rush lost it! The DVD is best described as just ok sound is pretty average the crowd response is worth seeing apart from that I`ll stick with my exit stage left Video, and keep this to remind me why I`ll probably leave next rush release of anything well alone , for me I don`t accept lesser from rush and pretend that the old days are still current, I refuse to conform or be outcast even through loyalty false praise is only feeding the big machine and saying its OK Alex we don`t like guitar solos anymore um next ? :-(
