Customer Reviews of Running on Empty
the experiment succeeds there aren't too many artists who have ventured into the arena of live/studio mixes, quite like this one. the only other one i can really think of is rattle and hum. and compared to that one, running is vastly superior. this is because running on empty is vastly superior to most any other album in its own right. it just capture life on the road and jackson's own coming of age story in a perfect, succinct expression of seventies rock and roll. a perfect balance of the intimate and the grandiose in rock music.
Should have done a remix
The album is as good as it has ever been with the same Jackson Browne sound that has made him famous. If the original multi-track tape is still avilable a new digital remix would most certainly be an improvement to sonic quality.
Rough Edges Make This One Of Jackson Browne's Best
RUNNING ON EMPTY differs from Jackson Browne's first four albums, and equals them, by featuring rough edges that resulted from varied conditions encountered while recording on the road. Taking some cues from the Allman Brothers Band's BROTHERS AND SISTERS, the Outlaws' self-titled debut, and the Marshall Tucker Band's WHERE WE ALL BELONG, Browne sings songs about being on the road, but still throws in a deep statement or two: in "You Love The Thunder", the line "You can try, but you can never go back the way you came" sums up in a sentence why I've chosen to skip food-related functions at my old school in favor of looking good for my favorite female celebrities. This album is a must-own for anyone interested in California rock, Southern rock, and/or Midwestern rock. However, Browne's advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's recent trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes all of his albums essential purchases for both your ears AND your conscience.
