Admittedly, my baby didn't like swinging as much as I thought babies did - but this is true of all swings, not just this one. He was VERY colicky early on, and rather than calming him, putting him in the swing would sometimes just make him scream more. (He didn't like to be put down... he's still not crazy about it sometimes at 4 1/2 months...)

HOWEVER... once he got a little bit past this stage... this swing was/is a lifesaver because it is the ONLY way he will take naps during the day. He can be sound asleep in my arms and if I put him in his crib during the day, he won't sleep more than 10 minutes. But if I put him in the swing, he will sleep for an hour on average - sometimes he will sleep as long as 3 or 4 hours.

I also pop him in the swing when he wakes up in the morning before a sensible time. Gets me a few more hours of sleep. He'll babble away happily for a bit and usually go back to sleep.

We only ever use the side to side motion on the swing - I don't think this swing does front to back as well as swings that are made just to do that, it doesn't sit the baby up quite the same, plus my baby doesn't seem to like front to back, even in other swings. I don't know if that's because he was used to side-to-side from day one or what.

One thing I really like about this swing is how open it is and how much it reclines - makes it very easy to lay my sleeping baby down without waking him. More traditional swings pose more difficulties in this area.

I think the only things I don't like are:

1. the "passive restraint" thing, the plastic part between the legs meant to keep them from sliding out - it makes it hard to put your baby in the swing if he/she is swaddled, and swaddling can really help with the fussies. He didn't seem to mind having his legs up in the air at weird angles from this, but it still bothers me. (The seat belt is also of the between-the-legs variety, as is the case on most baby items these days, but to be honest - call me a bad mommy - we never use the seat belt. He's just not gotten to the point where I think him getting out of this thing is even remotely possible.)

2. the toys on the tray are lame, and the tray is out of the reach of the baby anyway, due to the recline of the seat. However, I use the link-a-doos links to connect some of his other toys together, and I attach them to the toy tray so he can play with them without tossing them. Usually I leave the tray off, since it just gets in the way, but it is nice for holding toys. (It also works nicely with the otherwise annoying passive restraint just in case you have any slight worries about the baby getting out)

Some people complain about the mobile not going 'round long enough, but I think they do that so the batteries last a wee bit longer. It's an easy matter to reset it.

All in all, a wonderful swing... and did I mention it's CUTE?

I love this swing! For any mother who has ever read anything about newborns, you know that life outside the womb can be upsetting because it's TOO QUIET. This accounts for all those crazy babies (like mine) who fall asleep to the sound of the vacuum cleaner! If it is calming to a child to have a parent saying "Shhh, shhh, shhh" right in her ear, then the consistent noise of the swing is nothing! We have used this swing from the beginning, but last night I got the full appreciation of it! Our daughter developed an upper respiratory problem and needed to sleep sitting up. We put the swing next to our bed and she slept in it all night. The noise didn't bother us at all! I would much rather hear a swishing and clicking noise than the music! It was very easy to tune out. The whole family got some much needed rest. She is 4 months old and we have only changerd the batteries twice. If you're still concerned about the swing not having music, just remember, the womb is full of very loud swishing white noise,24 hours a day, not music. BUY THIS SWING!!

MUST HAVE
Words cannot explain how much I love this swing. We got the older version of this swing and used it a TON with my son who is almost 19 months old. In september we are expecting our second boy and we are planning on getting a second swing so that I will have one upstairs and one downstairs and won't have to be packing the swing up the stairs in the middle of the night.
