Customer Reviews of Royal Rumble
Royal Rumble 1989 is one of the best of its kind. Royal Rumble 1989 is one of the best examples of classic, cartoonish WWF, before it got stupid in the early 90s and totally different from its more edgy stuff that began shortly before the millennium.
The Royal Rumble is a unique event. It is what's known as a battle royal, a type of match in which any number of wrestlers can be in the ring at one time, and a wrestler is eliminated from the contest if he is knocked out of the ring over the top rope. In the WF version, the "Royal Rumble", the rules are the same but with the added interest of having new participants enter the ring at timed intervals, usually 2 minutes apart. The last man alone in the ring is the winner.
While this 1989 RR is not the first (there is a non-video Royal Rumble, the original which was aired on cable in 1988),
this one's one of the best. It should come as no surprise to most fans that wrestling is preplanned (I hate saying "fake", that's not the right word). But the fun in this particular Royal Rumble is that they had fun with the idea. Old school wrestler the Million Dollar Man, in storyline, threw some of his vast resources around to influence which wrestlers entered, and in what order. This turned the supposedly random participant
list into one that was more or less "fixed" for fun results.
For example, anyone who grew up loving the team "Demolition" (like me) get to see them have to fight each other. And the grand star of the WF, Hulk Hogan, at one point has to fight his two biggest rivals of the time (Akeem and the Big Bossman) all alone. I've been a fan of these events for some time (except for the miserable 1997 Royal Rumble), but this one is a standout due to the fun of coming right out and "fixing" the results (albeit in storyline).
There are about half a dozen other matches on the card as well, but most of them are throwaways. The women's champ Rockin' Robyn fights a lady's title match, there's a tag match featuring the Hart Foundation and Hacksaw Jim Duggan (star of the first Royal Rumble), and Rick Rude has a silly "pose-down" against the Ultimate Warrior.
But the main star is the hour long Royal Rumble. Not a lot of chance for actual athleticism occur in such matches, but there's a lot of fun and suspense waiting to see who'll come in next to throw some guys out.
First Ever Royal Rumble (1989)
Royal Rumble 1989 is the very first royal rumble ever and the fans took to the event very well , this event really took off after this very event. Especially when the wwf decided to send the winner to wrestlemania to face the world heavyweight champion.Royal rumble 1989 was headlined by two events one was the body pose contest , this was were ultimate warrior and ravishing rick rude decided to show off their bodies to all the fans and then everyone would decide who had the better body. The other major event was the actual royal rumble , everyone was very excited for this because it was really the first time the wwf based a whole pay per view around a battle royal. The rumble fetured superstars like -Hulk Hogan-Macho man randy savage-million dollar man-big john stud-akeem-big boss man-andre the giant-jake the snake roberts-and hercules plus many more , there is a part of the rumble were the mega powers (hogan and macho man) have a little fight. In the end the million dollar man payed his way to get the 30th pick and it came down to Big john studd vs Million dollar man to see who would win the rumble. Would the power of money prevail or would power win the rumble. In other action the Hart Foundation and hacksaw jim duggan took on dino bravo and the rougeo brothers , it was a very good and solid first contest the fans got into it alot. Then there was a womens championship contest were rockin robin defends her title against judy martin.Sherri challenged the winner of that match. The match overall was what really dragged the event down it wasnt exciting at all , it was good that they kept it down to a 5 minute match. The first ever Royal rumble is a very good event to add to your library of videos and it is extremely rare pick it up now~~~~~!
ROYAL RUMBLE Review
The first pay-per-view Royal Rumble (there was one prior on basic cable) was one of the defining moments in the WWF. The match itself featuring Demolition going at it with one another and the infamous altercation between Hulk Hogan and Macho Man that would lead to their split and eventual match at Wrestlemania V. The "Royal Rumble" concept was groundbreaking at the time because it was one of the only times that you would see the good guys fighting one another and vice versa with the bad guys. This was a well put together type of match where they didn't just throw out the obvious winner and play it off predictably.
Sadly, the video version is notorious for cutting out a few of the matches that aired on the original PPV. It would be great if the WWF were to re-release all the Rumbles in a library collection similiar to the one they made with "Wrestlemania".
