Not an introductory product.
I am a chinese person who has lost his mandarin over time. I am not a beginner at languages, at one time as a child I spoke french, english, and chinese. So after completely losing my chinese, which I now regret completely, I attempted this software after hearing it's impressive "self" reviews. I found what many of the other users found. Lack of instructions. The only reason I knew what the heck was going on was only because I knew a little bit of chinese. My girlfriend was trying to learn with me and I was embarassed that she had to attempt to learn in this manner, I basically had to explain what words meant and break things down. The software is just flashcards with audio.

Rosetta Stone Mandarin Chinese
This software is an outstanding tool for learning chinese when classes are not possible. I imagine it would also be an excellent supplement for anyone who is taking chinese in a classroom. The program works on PC and Mac - I have a Mac. This program displays several photos to the student and a native speaker utters a sentence that applies to one of the photos. The learner must choose which photo the native speaker is addressing. Within one hour I was recognizing and choosing correctly from the photos at a satisfying rate. I was impressed quickly. I've had the software for over a month now and I am still impressed. I have a pen pal in Beijing who talks with me on the phone regularly and she is so astonished by how quickly I have picked up the sentences and phrases I practice on her(including pronunciation), that she is convinced I am a genius. But I am certainly no genius-the software is very good. The pictures change and the sentences change a little every time you answer and in the changes, one can see what changes in the chinese sentence and it becomes clear what the sentence means. The use of the photos and the language without translation causes the learner to associate the picture directly with the language instead of translating from one language to another. I never saw a chinese word in my life other than chicken lo mein before and I now can understand and speak phrases (see above) verified by a REAL LIVE CHINESE PERSON IN BEIJING. ...So I know it's good. Any real learning will require a little work and once in a while I do go to the dictionary, (rarely and briefly) and it is very effective. Na ga chuan hong yi fu de nan hair zai ti qiu! My kids were doing it over my shoulder and picking out the right photos after a while as well. <

If your really determined to learn and willing to put a little time and work into it, you can get something out of this software. I like it because I can take it wherever I go on my laptop. When I have a few minutes, I'm picking photos out and listening. Immersion is the goal and you have to do that yourself (think about it all of the time) It is the only way. You are learning a new language. It is ALOT of information. This is just a tool. In my opinion, a very good one. GOOD LUCK.

Maybe not the best purchase
Well you certainly will be able to recognize words and answer the questions correctly, but if you're expecting to understand what the words actually mean...I wouldn't recommend this. <
