What's Next--the Paper Napkin Way
I went to a party the other day and the first thing that caught my eye was this enormous centerpiece made out of feathers and Morning Glory, trumpet-shaped blooms. A few empty cocktail glasses stood on a nearby table while a turbaned bartender took orders and made some mighty fine concoctions. He'd pass you a drink along with an arresting paper napkin, pink and pale orange and a kind of fuchsia. It took me awhile to figure out the pattern was supposed to be a Martini that someone had dipped a high heel into! I asked the hostess where she got these napkins and she dug out the label from a pile of discards, and she admitted she had been attracted to the colors and the low, low Amazon price, rather than the picture on the napkin which she and I both found somewhat humorously grotesque, as though an animal had come into the party and started throwing people's footwear together with their drinks. She crossed the room and asked the hired barman to start mixing up a batch of new drinks that would match the pale orange color of the cocktail pictured by "Rosanna" in the illustration. <

>After that, the party flowed freely and everyone had at least one! (Drink, and several napkins.) I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon got many new orders for this brand of napkins as our hostess was now well briefed on who created these stylish napkins. It was like something out of a late Arthur Freed movie featuring Dolores Gray. As it turned out, the feathery centerpiece was there to honor our special guest, who was a trumpeter with a visiting orchestra. He did not make it to the party but those who were there no longer cared. So you can see a fine time was had by all.
