Customer Reviews of Romeo Must Die [Region 2]
Entertainment not at it's best <
>Jet Li stars in this movie about a policeman of Hong Kong who went to jail for covering his Father crimes in order to get his brother safely in the U.S., but when that brother is killed, he escapes from prison, takes a plane and comes to find his brother's killer. <

>The rest of the movie is a very dull detective film, with coincidences all around, but some good fights where you can almost see the cables. One good point, the killer of the brother was very unexpected.
some you win, and dim sum you lose
This film barely gets away with a 4-star rating from me. While I enjoy it overall, it lacks what a great Jet Li movie offers - and that is great fight scenes. Don't get me wrong, there are some fantasticly creative fights (especially the cleverly choreographed scene with the fire hose), but every one is nealry ruined with an added element of Matrix-like effetcs using wires that look very bad. As for the story, I enjoy it too, but find it to not be quite that much like the Romeo & Juliet scene that it is supposed to be. There ends up being some unexpected twists in the story, which was nice, but accompanied with really no romance. Its not what you might expect.

>If you are into it, the best thing about the movie is its cool factor. It combines martial arts action with elements of hip-hop, pitting the black and Asian communities up against each other (the only thing that really connects to Romeo & Juliet). The soundtrack constantly has a variety of beats throughout the movie, and the fights are flashy (though a bit overdone unfortunately, as mentioned earlier). Romeo is basically Han (Jet Li) and Juliet is Trish (the late Aaliyah), and although they form a type of Romeo & Juliet bond, there is no romantic exchange during the film. The two raging sides end up having little to do with one another, as the acts of violence are actually being committed from within - which is where the twists of the plot begin. There is some humor thrown into the mix, mainly from the Anthony Anderson character. DMX has a small role, but apparently some magic was felt since it went on to create a DMX/Jet Li movie - Cradle 2 The Grave.

>As a martial arts or Jet Li fan, prepare for some disspointment in the action. Although there are some great original felt fights, some of the effects just ruin them. The creators tried a cool idea with switching to an X-ray like view of a body if a bone/bones were about to get broken in the fight, but I found it to be unnessecary. I enjoy the final fight that Jet Li has, and it could have been better if it didn't finish on such a horrible visual note, once again making affects that look really bad.

>Overall, this is a fun movie. Its fun to see both sides at each other and then to find out whats really going on behind closed doors so to speak. The action is fun and enjoyable, if you can overcome some lousy effects. Not Jet Li's best, but its still better than a lot of other martial art movies out there.
