Rome is a painstakingly mounted production that earned eight well-deserved Emmy nominations in such categories as costumes, set design, and art direction. Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) was honored with a Director's Guild Award for the first episode, "The Stolen Eagle." But artistic considerations aside, instantly addicted viewers will agree with Atia, who notes at one point, "I adore the secrecy, the intrigue. It's most thrilling." --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of Rome - The Complete First Season
A 2000 Year-old Soap Opera Reading the Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius you can't help but get the sense that there is nothing new in how people interact with each other - with how societies form. <

>With all of the previous reviews in mind, after watching this exquisite series, watch it again for the fantastic detail. Who knew they had film crews in ancient Rome. The hair styles, the costumes, the background scenery, the background action, all of it. The camera might be focused on a conversation in a street between two people but you also see everyday Rome going on in the background. The bread sellers, the potters, the merchants and buyers, all doing, well, what they did. <

>The comparisons to I Claudius are inevitable and not unjustified. Both are first-rate BBC productions but as others have mentioned, this is from a more plebian or equite point of view rather than patrician. We see the Roman Republic dissolve, just like the American Republic is doing today. "Res publica" - literally meaning a thing of the people - morphing into dictatorshipa and oligarchy. <

>Sort of like "Tacitus-the movie". Worth every penny!
what's not to love? Rome has it all
This is one of the best productions I have ever seen. The story is compelling, the characters equally so, and the set.. ah, the set! Opulent would be an understatement. Watching Rome is like being in a wonderfully entertaining dream. Everything in it is larger than life.
A Historical Buff's Orgasmic Find
The historical accuracy, the drama interwoven throughout factual and fictional events, the production values, and the acting all come together in one of the best productions I've seen in years. For those who believe classical history was all heroes and philosophers, I give you a program which challenges anyone to say that humanity today is in a moral decline. We have always been a rather repugnant breed despite era, from ancient Rome to modern day America. Capturing the brutal nature of our ancestors, this series follows the intrigues of various factions throughout Rome as the Republic teeters waiting for the inevitable push by Caesar to send it over. If you haven't seen this series I highly recommend you find a copy as soon as possible. Take a look at a world long past and see it is very similar to our own.
