Rockland Is Kim At His Best
I'll never forget the first time I heard the song "Rock N Roll Duty". I thought I'd never heard rock and roll so hard before. This was Kim Mitchell stripped down to a quartet: Just drums, bass, guitar, and some keys. No programming, no synth rock that had dissapointed me so much on his last album. This was rock and roll!
Aside from Akimbo Alogo, Kim Mitchell has never done a more solid solo record than Rockland. With the exception of one song ("Tangle Of Love", which was just too soft and boring) this album keeps your attention from start to finish. It contained no fewer than three hit singles: "Rock N Roll Duty", "Rocklandwonderland", and "Expedition Sailor". The latter included a beautiful acoustic guitar solo by Rik Emmett (ex-Triumph), forshadowing that man's own future solo career. It's also a highlight of Kim's entire catalogue.
Really, Rockland is a perfect Kim Mitchell album. The rockers are catchy and "Expedition Sailor" is one of the best ballads you'll ever hear. Kim keeps his weird tendencies (mostly) in check, and just gets down to doing his "rock n roll duty".
