Customer Reviews of Robin of Sherwood (season 3 part 1)
Robin of Sherwood, the third season This second region DVD box offers to the viewers the first six episodes of the third season of 'Robin of Sherwood'. Which are 'Herne's Son (Part One and Two', 'The Power of Albion', 'The Inheritance', 'The Sheriff of Nottingham' and 'The Cross of St. Ciricus'. Made by HTV/Goldcrest and broadcast in the UK by ITV (1984-1986). Inspired by a rather different premise than in the first and second seasons. The departure of Michael Praed (Robin of Loxley) from the series, compelled creator Richard Carpenter and the writers to search for a new Robin. Rather than continuing the character of Robin of Loxley with another actor they decided to create an entirely different Robin. This new Robin was Robert, son of the earl of Huntingdon. Thus the series drew inspiration from both incarnations of the Robin Hood legend: that he was probably not of noble stock or an earl's son. Cast as the new Robin was actor Jason Connery, son of Sean. This because of his acting capacity as well as for the impact of the Connery name. Jason Connery faced a difficult task, he had to compete with Michael Praed's ghost and his father's interpretation of Robin (Sean Connery played Robin Hood in 'Robin and Marian'). Though his excellent self effacing, confident, eminently human and sympathetic Robin would win the hearts of the viewers. As the new Robin and as an actor Jason Connery would earn the respect of his fellow cast members and they became good friends as well. The wonderful chemistry on and off screen between the actors is once again evident and one of the things which makes this series so special. The new Robin and his friends - Marion (Judi Trott), Little John (Clive Mantle), Will Scarlet (Ray Winstone), Friar Tuck (Phil Rose), Much (Peter Llewellyn Williams and Nasir (Mark Ryan, Richard Carpenter was the first author to introduce a Saracen character into the band of merry men) would face many challenges together. The Sheriff (Nickolas Grace) and Gisburne (Robert Addie) would once more thwart them with relish. From the rushes on the floors to the soldiers' chain mail the series looked still wonderfully authentic and gritty. The elements of mysticism (Herne) and sorcery contributed once more to its success as well as the excellent perfomances of the outstanding cast and the dedication of the crew. New writers had joined the crew as well, like for instance Anthony Horowitz who wrote several excellent and dark episodes. <

>My favourite episodes were: 'Herne's Son (Part One and Two)' , 'The Sheriff of Nottingham' and 'The Cross of St. Ciricus' . 'Herne's Son' introduced the character of Robert of Huntingdon/Robin as he would be summoned by Herne a year after the denouement of the 'The Greatest Enemy' episode of the second season. Although I prefer Michael Praed as Robin, Herne's second son became also very dear to me. This episode also introduced the character of Gulnar (an excellent performance by Richard O'Brien) who would return in several other episodes. Further I would like mention Judi Trott's truly poignant and tender Marion. With music by Clannad again, there is a beautiful new track in this particular episode: 'Caislean Oir'. <

>Will the full series ever be released for US audiences? Region 2, (UK) already has it, but I don't have a dvd player that plays that.
There will never again be a better Robin Hood!
Please, please let this series be on DVD someday soon. This series was the most exquisitely crafted work of art...it would be a tragedy if it were never to be released on DVD. This series was magnificent...beautiful & talented actors, historically impressive, a VERY REAL, raw and inspirational experience. The performances given by Michael Praed were so powerful...no one will ever be a better Robin Hood (not even Jason Connery in the later episodes!) As another viewer mentioned, I also grew up watching this series. It is in my top 5 all-time favorites! My tapes are worn-out as well...I would also seriously buy every single episode if it were ever realeased on DVD, regardless of price.
