Customer Reviews of Rise
'Rise' Breaks New Ground in Modern Rock 'Rise' is an ambient, rocking delight. From the first notes of this, their debut record, it is clear that Rubyhorse have created their own sound, unlike anything out there today. In a world of conformity and normality, Rubyhorse set themselves apart as an exciting alternative to mainstream pop rock. The single, Sparkle, is just the tip of the iceberg, only hinting at the amalgam of electronic beats and rock and roll heart behind the record.
The unity of the tracks is a true rarity in modern music. The songs work so well together, and off one another, that it is impossible to think of them as a random assembly of possible singles. Happy in the Sunshine, the album opener, eases you in with a soothing sound collage, then ever so gradually shifts to an upbeat guitar anthem. The optimistic ballad Punchdrunk boasts former Beatle George Harrison on slide guitar, a great honor on which Rubyhorse have made no attempt to capitalize. The soft-spoken final track, The First of the Year, serves almost as a look forward and backward, at once a "thanks for listening" and "see you next time."
Rubyhorse's marriage of classic rock and modern stylism, European and American sounds, stunning instrumentation with melodic vocals and moving lyrics, is the perfect addition to any music fan's collection. 'Rise' is the work of a band primed for greatness.
A must-buy!
I'd been trying for weeks to find out who's song "Sparkle" was and finally heard the band's name yesterday - so I went out and bought the CD right away. It's been years since I've been able to buy a CD after hearing just one song and totally been able to enjoy the entire album! Rubyhorse is definitely going to be a favorite of mine...I love the guitar action and vocals - actually the entire band just makes the music flow so perfectly...this CD is staying in my car's CD player and I'm learning those lyrics - hopefully they'll tour in my area again so I sing along with them live!
Not bad
I was surprised when I read all the positive reviews for this CD. Yeah, there are a couple songs that are good, but I wouldn't exactly describe the whole CD as "amazing" or "wonderful." Most of the music is fairly ordinary or sometimes a little grating. I'd listen to it before I'd listen to Britney Spears/NSync/pop crap... but that doesn't mean I really like it.
There are a couple exceptions. I really liked "Sparkle," "Evergreen," and "Horseless." They're just hidden in the mush that is the rest of Rubyhorse's CD. I guess I don't regret buying this CD - I bought it used - but if I lost this CD I wouldn't be completely upset.
Just don't expect this CD to be something it's not.
