One hundred years from now, a historian may categorize snowboarding's greatest achievement as its expansion of the English vocabulary. For its part, snowboarding has brought new meanings to the words "indy," "mute," "method," and "melancholy." For those not attuned to the sport's phat lingo, these are all terms for snowboarding maneuvers that generally refer to grabbing a particular part of the board while airborne. Not a word of this terminology is overlooked in the first snowboarding game for the Dreamcast. Also included are appropriately stylized characters, each with two outfits to choose from, and licensed gear from real snowboarding companies Bonfire and Salomon.

Armed with a glossary in the form of a user manual, players will soon be able to talk the talk. But in this game, walking the walk, or rather pulling the tricks, requires quite a bit of controller dexterity. Luckily the game is not based solely on snowboarding tricks, but also has a healthy dose of racing at its core. What makes this game stand out is the length and detail of each downhill course. Jumping off the roof of sheep farms, avoiding falling icicles, and catching the spotlight of a hovering helicopter are all in a day's play in Rippin' Riders--and that's just the first track!

A unique two-player mode challenges players to shrink the opponent's split screen by outscoring him or her. Track graphics are up to snuff, but the players look a bit chunky. --Jeff Young

Customer Reviews of Rippin' Riders

Fun for a while
Now that the Dreamcast has gone on permanent vacation, one of the things it will be remembered most for is it's awesome sports library. Rippin' Riders is not one of those games however, but it's clearly not a bad game either. UEP Systems, the developers behind the Cool Boarders series, seem to have been on a time budget to put this game together. Graphics are super smooth and look great, while the sound effects have very nice touches here and there, but control is a major issue. Not to mention now and then you'll run into a wall that came out of nowhere and it costs you valuable time to figure out what direction to go in when you get back up. Plus, after you unlock everything between hidden tracks to hidden characters and boards, there is really nothing else exciting to do in the game. All in all, Rippin' Riders isn't really a bad game, but the last time I checked it is the only pure snowboarding game for the Dreamcast, and that alone makes it worth checking out.

Not just another "boredin" game
If you like boading games like CoolBoarders or 1080 you'll like Rippin Riders. The graphics put any other boardin game to shame. The tracks are sick with awesome backrounds. The characters are off the hook. I love DJ Ken, he's fat, got two turntables and sports a hawaiian shirt. One guy has a MIB suit and a football uniform complete with helmet. The tricks are extreme, one level I can pull a 2540. Triple backflips and helicopter spins are common. Every character also has signature moves. Every character is so different in style that it's almost a new game with each one. You have to master the style of every rider. When the game is first played many options will be locked so you have to beat all the levels to unlock the various tracks, boards, costumes and players.

The game has awesome replays. The graphics on two player mode suffer quite a bit, but game play makes up for it. Play head to head and every trick you hit takes part of your opponents screen until until your opponent can no longer see where he's going. It's pretty fun.

The game is very (near extremely) difficult to master. To achieve first place rankings on the tracks you will have to have the track completely memorized and hit perfect tricks off every hit. To pull tricks is also tough to master, and landing - forget about it. I play this game every night and have unlocked maybe half off the games features. It is the first true gamers boardin game. You can't pick this game up and master it in a night or two, but when you get the hang of it there are no limits to what you can do.

BOREING!!!!!!!!!!!
Boreing game, good graphics but cheesey cources, characters are civilians with weird clothes on, can beat the game in 5 minutes, super easy, I bought for [X]and would no let me return, DON'T WASTE YOUR $MONEY$ BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!! BE SMART!!!
