A Good Specimen of an Indispensible Genre Every household with very young children needs certain kinds of books. In addition to the one-of-a-kind classics of children's (The Cat in the Hat; Goodnight Moon) the children's library needs basic staples - counting books, alphabet books, common-household-objects books. Guessing books.
"Riggeldy Jiggeldy Joggeldy Jam" is one of the last category. And it's a good one. It's from Granny Press - a writing and publishing organization of grandmothers - and the experience with children shows. Care was actually taken to make this book fun to read - a note on the rhythmic pattern of the book's "chorus" is included in the back. And the rhymes are easy and unforced, as is the diction.
The color scheme- shades of grey with accents in shades of red - is a bit surprising at first, seeming almost as if a color book had been printed in black-and-white. But the colors are the originals, and the style of the illustrations is lively and engaging. Like the rest of the book, the illustrations were done by a grandmother. Joyce Behr's paper cutouts have, for the most part, an unforced spontaneity. And they strike a good balance between realism and stylization.
But enough about the theory - what do actual kids think of the book? It was a bit easy for my five-year-old, who went through, guessing every animal quickly by supplying the right rhyme. Younger kids, though, will take continued pleasure in guessing the right animal every time, and hearing the rhymes again and again.
Books of this sort will be requested many times, and "Riggeldy Jiggeldy Joggeldy Jam" is one that parents won't mind reading.
