Customer Reviews of Resist
Superlative!!!!!!!! I'm so glad this album is finally getting the recognition it deserves. One of the finest dance albums of last year is finally beginning to break into the U.K. album charts. I first heard of Kosheen when I saw them play support to Faithless last year-and they were wonderful live! I didn't bother buying the c.d. then but I kept hearing their stuff in clubs and when you get to hear this album in it's entirety you find that you recognise so many of the tracks from clubs. It was appropriate that they should tour with Faithless because they have pretty strong similarities in sound. Kosheen are sort of branded in the dance genre-yet to my mind they are not a pure techno or dance act. This album proves they have far more depth then just a few catchy club hits. They incorporate the Faithless sound (If you liked Outrospective you'll adore this c.d.) but they also have strong drum and bass influences and having recorded the c.d. in Bristol they seem to have inherited some of that city's own particular grooves notably trip-hop. Many of the tracks are pretty up tempo but yet they are delivered in a sort of ambient chilled out sort of way. It's all furious at times, very bassomatic drum machines-with synthesisers and sometimes they use acoustic guitars to startling effects. Lead singer Sian Evans sounds like a cross between Portishead's Beth Gibbons and Moloko's Róisín Murphy. She has an effective yet at times almost machine like dispassionate voice. It suits the tracks so well especially the ones like "Suicide" and "Empty Skies" which almost have an industrial dance feel-sort of like what Curve used to sound like. Another surprising thing for me was the fact that I imagined that any album that has 15 tracks plus a bonus remix would eventually have quite a smattering of dud tracks-but this one doesn't really. My only slight fault would be that many of the tracks sound terribly similar on the first couple of plays-but after a while you discover each ones own distinctive sound. There's no point in me listing track after track and give it a rating-just trust me after hearing "Hide U"-(bonus remix is incredible!) and "Catch" you'll be totally hooked and very pleased you bought the c.d.
Kosheen Hit Rhe Mark With A Stand Out LP
Darren Beale and Mark Morrison (Decoder & Substance) have been delivering diesel drum and bass to the ears and dance floors across the globe. But in the early summer of 1999 Darren and Mark teamed up with singer-song writer Sian Evans and began the project that would later be called Kosheen. Now almost 3 years later Kosheen is ready to release their debut album.
The great thing about this album is that it doesn't try to fit vocals on top of a drum and bass tracks. Each track has a unique blend between traditional song writing and electronic drum & bass programming. The album is filled with guitars spread over classic amen breaks, squelch-y synth progressions, catchy hooks and fresh, lively vocals. The first single released "Hide-U" is the predominate opening track on the album. Nice breaks, stabs and Sian's wonderful voice come together to create a definitely unique and energetic sound. The album continues along with "Cover", a mellow ballad where piano progressions are coated over beats and another lovely vocal performance by Sian. "Catch" is next up, and after hundreds of listening to this album, it has to be one of my favorites. "Catch" has a cleverly catchy quality to it. The vocals explode ontop of arpeggiated synths and beats, but yet it's not cluttered with unneeded noise and progressions. Other notable tracks from the album include "Hungry" with its dominant acoustic guitar riffs and seductive performance by Sian, and "Face in a Crowd" which is just explosive, it brings Kosheen into uncharted territory, it's the most progressive track on the whole album.
What I like about the sound of this album is that its not cluttered with too many layers. The trio is able to get their point across without going overboard with progressions and sounds. Which is what makes this album somewhat unique in the whole pop rock/drum and bass crossover. Kosheen is definitely taking a new twist on that old idea. Say so long to other crossover acts such as Olive; Kosheen is where it's at.

You dont have it? GET IT!
I saw the band at the festival in my homecountry. Flying little higher at that time I was amazed. Next day I thought it might have been because of the THC in my blood so I pretty much forgot about the band. Now during visit in states I saw it in the store and bought it because of 'temporary homesickness'. And I can tell you their music is great whether you are high or not. Music makes you move but mainly the melodies just stick to your mind and ask for replay. My favourite songs are 2,3,4,6,7,8,11,12 and 1,5,9,10,13,14,15.
