But Reno 911 would have gotten old fast if it was just Police Academy-style mishaps and slapstick. What elevates this from being a one-joke series are the intimately observed characters' quirks and personal dramas. Dangle has a penchant for short shorts, and, in the first episode at least, comely male traffic offenders. Dangle is not exactly Capt. Furillo (from Hill Street Blues) in the compassion department. When the squad learns that unwed Deputy C. Johnson (Wendy McLendon-Covey) is pregnant, he jokingly searches for a phone book when considering who the father might be. "There's usually a phone book around here," he shrugs. "It would have been funnier." Comedy Central may be guilty of running these episodes into the ground, but for Reno 911's devoted following, and for rookies to the force, this boxed set of commercial-free episodes, some commentary-enhanced, is just the ticket. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of Reno 911 - The Complete First Season
the best show on tv. reno 911! is the best show on tv. network, cable, pay cable, you name it, this show is the only comedy show that keeps me laughing throughout an entire episode. many may say it sounds too gimmicky, having the lieutenant wear short shorts, having a short-haired woman that is the butt of all the jokes, an ex-stripper, a trailerpark living redneck, and other odd characters that join into the mix. but the funny this is - it works. the show is all improv, or at most they all follow a loose script. i have to admit that i had never seen any of the first season episodes, but began watching when the second season rolled around and couldn't believe the kind of show i had been missing. i picked this dvd up the first day it went on sale and could not have been happier with my purchase. the show is an absolute riot. you will not be disappointed!
this show is a hoot!!!
Reno 911 is one of the funniest things i have seen on comedy central so far. the cast is extremely talented, the characters are truly hilarious. i love Niecy Nash as "TT" and Kerri Kenney is fabulous as Jackie the crack addicted prostitute. my favorite episode has got to be when Garcia and Raineesha wind up in the hot tub together!!! this dvd is a great value for its price-well worth it for fourteen episodes plus extras. this is truly one of the great comedy series of all time!
Original and funny
This is a great series that is full of all different kinds of politically incorrect humor. I like the interaction between the wide variety of characters in the program. Sometimes, though, I wonder if there are too many characters. Seems like a lot of people to keep track of. Parts of the show remind a little of Sledge Hammer, which aired on ABC from 1986-1988. I agree with those mentioning Sledge earlier, that those who like Reno 911 will probably like Sledge Hammer: Season One (available July 27th, here at Amazon) as well, which revolves around one character and the few around him.
