Customer Reviews of Remixes
Raw I picked this one up for about a third the price from Europe. This is a 10 cut remix project by Cesare Malfatti/Stefano Ghittoni, AKA The Dining Rooms. They are based on the Idizioni-Ishtar label and this is a release that was around the time of Numero Deux, and features remixed cuts from that album and Subterranean Modern.
It's a solid cd - but it is very raw! The sound, the guitars - you can tell they were experimenting with different sounds and old-school almost 50's like guitar fades. Some of the cuts were a little on the dance side, a few on the chill-side and they weren't shy on the effects and clips. The most interesting cuts to me was first, the remake of "Mr. Dupont". The one on Numero Deux is admittedly a little boring to me after the first two minutes - but this one sort of loops and has a real "spy" theme to it with the dialogue in the background. "Maria" is another decent track - you feel like you're in a little bar somewhere underground.
So if you're looking for something more polished and modern like the sound in their new one "Tre", you'll be GRAVELY disappointed. Yet if you're in tune with their roots and like the whole sort of spy-themed 60's soundtrack, you may enjoy this. But is it worth the rather high price here? That's debatable since I know what it is. Then again, I would've probably gotten it anyway since I'm a big time Dining Rooms fan and was curious about this sound.
Underground Remixes
I really dig this - I picked this up after I got into The Dining Rooms "Numero Deux" album. I was interested in a few of the alternative takes on some of their own tracks and cuts. The Dining Rooms are on Idizion-Ishtar's "Milano 2000" label - at least the songs from this and Subterranean Modern are. So they work with some pretty good musicians and artists from Europe and within their own label (Fragmentorchestra, Soulstance, etc.)
This CD was pretty good - albeit VERY pricey on Amazon - I found the ten track release for a third of the price. Highlights include their early trademark fading guitar on some cuts, an ultra cool M. Dupont "spy story life set mix" and a downtempo dojo affair with Maria. Downsides? Some of the cuts just weren't my cup of tea.
I'd recommend this to The Dining Rooms fan that prefers Subterranean Modern over Numero Deux, and probably the fan that prefers Numero Deux over "Tre", their latest one. Not to emphasis a play on words, but "Tre" is a bit more "modern" after all!
