The British honor their dead from both World Wars with ceremony and silence each year on a day they call Remembrance Day. This documentary focuses on the main ceremony at the Cenotaph--a monument honoring the fallen--and at Scotland's Inveraray. Writer and narrator Tom Fleming introduces the members of the various processions, from the dignitaries (including Margaret Thatcher, then-Prime Minister John Major, and then-opposition leader Tony Blair) laying wreaths of red poppies at the monument to the battalions of marching veterans, some of whom are confined to wheelchairs and carts due to their injuries. Fleming interjects stories of the various battles, telling heart-wrenching tales such as how one-third of a 60,000-member unit wound up dead in a day. Hymns are sung, prayers said, and bagpipes played during this solemn 93-minute-long event first broadcast live on the BBC in 1996. --Kimberly Heinrichs
