Customer Reviews of Red
One More Red Nightmare King Crimson's closing studio album of their 1970's period, is probably their heaviest. Crimson fans who are accustomed to their symphonic albums like _In The Court Of The Crimson King_, _In The Wake Of Poseidon_ or _Islands_, may be very surprised to hear dark, thick and crunchy heavy metal guitar. This can arguably be called classic progressive metal.
Now, the tracks: _Red_, the instrumental title track, is fiery and dissonant heavy metal. While heavy, there are plenty of tempo shifts and complex guitar harmonics. _Fallen Angel_, is a poignant ballad. It seems painful to listen to sometimes. _One More Red Nightmare_, has some funky grooves, while rocking out. Some of John Wetton's vocals seem out of tune, but on here, it's atmospherical charm. _Providence_ is the second instrumental of the album. It starts off with classical dissonance, combined with abstract percussion. Then, it becomes improvisational, featuring Robert Fripp's fiery soloing, Bill Bruford's soulful, rhythmically precise drumming and John Wetton's technical, yet funky bass playing. _Starless_ is arguably the finest moment on here. The first four minutes of this twelve minute epic seem innocent, sweet and sad. What follows may be the most devastating, ominous, disturbing and compelling part of the disc. The last eight minutes showcase enough fiery, ominous, tortured and chaotic instrumental sadism/masochism to make your skin crawl in ambivalence. Think of the fiery sounds you heard from 21st Century Schizoid Man, but more intense. That's about the best description I can give about this masterpiece. There's also some lovely saxaphone playing here.
_Red_ is progressive heavy metal blended with funk, classical and jazz. If this synthesis appeals to you, pick this up. It's essential King Crimson.
One of my top five of all time
In 1994 I picked up this album, deciding to give King Crimson one more try (the only other album I owned by them was Lizard). I wasn't prepared for what this album had in store.
To call Red a dark album is like saying The Beatles were kind of popular. Even on the hundredth listen, this album is still a very dark, ominous, powerful recording. 25 years after its release, this album still sounds fresh and timeless. The raw, dry guitar sound and the overwhelming power of the rhythm section still sounds utterly modern. To put it simply: sonically, this recording hasn't aged much at all.
Though the album is fairly short, it's still a riveting listen. The first three songs - Red, Fallen Angel, and One More Red Nightmare come in rapid succession, all perfect to listen to if you're trying to get pumped up for something or if you're just in a bad mood and want to listen to something sinister.
The quiet, lurking evil of Providence provides an interlude before Starless, one of King Crimson's greatest pieces. Starting out as a very quiet, almost mournful ballad, it quickly becomes mid-70s-Crim-trademark tension and release.
This is an album that everyone should hear at least once in their lifetime. It's completely powerful and I've never heard anything quite like it since.
Can't stop listening to this one.
