Customer Reviews of Red Army Chronicles Vol. 1
The People's Army I know it's easy to pass off this video as just another shallow attempt by the Kremlin gangsters to brainwash gullible western liberals. So I'll just tell you right up front that I'm grateful to the Red Army, for very personal reasons. You see, my Father was one of the handful of Americans who had the misfortune of making it to the Eastern Front. He was an airman on a B-24, shot down over Ploesti, and spent at least 6 months in a prison camp. The Soviets rescued him when they swept through Romania. When I was a child, and before his conservatism reasserted itself, he used to regale us with stories about the Russians, how they were friendly, and that there were even women serving on the tank crews. He was near death when the Red Cross was able to medivac him back to the states, where he spent six weeks recovering from the wounds and privations he suffered at Axis hands. He was always very grateful to the Russian people. So am I, because I, and none of my siblings would be here if not for them.
These chronicles are really designed for a Russian audience, because there is a great emphasis placed on obsure battles, people and places. Obsure, at least, to western ears. It is always best when a people tells its story in its own words. I was amazed at the prevalence of calvary in the pre-WWII soviet army, and the initial lack of technological sophistication. Also, the purge of the military seemed so very unnessary and pointless. Was this an example of mass paranoia, later echoed in killing fields of Cambodia? Nonetheless, I found Volume I to be informative.
I look forward to succeeding volumes. We must keep in mind that the Russians did indeed defeat the Wehrmacht, not only due to the Russian winter, but due to sound tactics, overwhelming numbers, and even technological superiority. The T-33 tank made mincemeat of the German Mark IV, and could easily manuever in snow and mud. The Germans were in for a nasty surprize at the battle of Moscow, wherein T-33's were first present in sufficient numbers to make a difference. Let us also remember that without the Red Army, which engaged about 280 of Germany's 340 army divisions, we would be goose-stepping our way around the brave new reich, turning our handicapped and minorities into fertilizer. Also, the heroic efforts of US and British air forces kept the Luftwaffe reduced to a troop support role on the eastern front, so this greatly helped, too. It's clear neither the Western forces nor the Eastern forces could have defeated the Wermacht alone. We won the war together.
I'm a Vietnam veteran, and I know all about fighting the proletariat. I'm just expressing my opinion, and gratitude, to those nameless heroes of yesteryear who rescued my Father from certain anihilation. I'm glad you left a record behind for all of us to appreciate.
