For those not in the know, the 303 and the 909 were, respectively, a much-celebrated bass synth and a drum machine, used by the stars to make a number of famous dance hits. Trouble was, for all their niftiness they eventually became obsolete, and so everybody thought we had seen the last of them. Until now. With this easy-to-use chunk of domestic music software, you can recapture the cool of the 303 and the 909. From the style of knobs to the width of the dials, almost every effort has been made to mimic the looks of those famous precursors, as well as to reproduce their funky bass licks and groovy drum diddles. What makes all this even better is that ancient technology has been married to modern tech-wizardry: this is an OK bit of kit in its own right. From waveforms to drum loop sequencer to song editing functions to pan 'n' feedback controls, all the basic facilities you need to make good old-fashioned dance music are here.
Given the price range, this isn't, of course, quite the most potent of packages; that said, any DJ looking for a starter pack with a hint of vintage class could do a heck of lot worse. --Sean Thomas

Customer Reviews of Rebirth One Rhythm Machines
A classic syntheziser simulation for PC and Mac I don't know how long Rebirth has already been out there. Steinberg published it long time ago for the professional musician and it came with a hefty price tag (around 180 $). Now obviously data becker purchased the rights to distribute this little wonder of software programming and sells it for the consumer market at a much lower price. As said, the software is classic and nearly faultless: You get complete simulations of 2 monophone synthezisers and one drummachine, which are faithful recreations of old roland devices as they've been sold in the early 80ies. They can be sequenced and effects can be applied. So this is all an electronic musician needs to create techno, trance or ambient stuff. It's all a bit basic and pretty hard to understand how to program the synthezisers. Therefor I have to deduct one star since data becker didn't put a printed manual (there is one as pdf on the disc) in the box. Without it, the software is pretty useless. With it, it will take an hour or so to get decent sounds out of it. If you always liked the sound of 80is synthezisers and have your own ambitions about making music, this should be the cheapest way to start doing it.
