Customer Reviews of Real Life
Punk with intelligence I bought this CD to replace a long lost casette of it a friend gave me in 1978. In its day, it stood well apart from most of its contemporaries in the punk genre by having imaginative lyrics, very musical hooks, and the fact that the musicians showed some prowess in playing their instruments. It is still very listenable today.
Key Album in Rock History
Bought this album on release way too long ago. It's a definite classic.Rates right up there with Pere Ubu's Modern Dance and the Stranglers' and Devo's first albums. Howard Devoto makes like a sneering Peter Hamill and delivers the goods with searingly sung ,amusingly cynical lyrics and a precision- balanced band . All the players are incredible. My personal fave tracks "Burst" -great guitar. "Motorcade" -international intrigue-exactly."Real Life"-"So this is real life-Your telling me"Great. Magazine was way ahead of their time and was probably lost in the New Wave "image above substance" blight that took over shortly after this masterpiece was produced.
77' PUNK? DANCE PUNK? POST PUNK? NAH!
All of these particular labels don't do justice to this BUZZCOCKS offshoot. I wouldn't necessarily call this new wave as I've heard them mentioned as. Art punk might be the closest thing here. Howard has angry/cynical sneer in his singing while the band plays these gloomy danceable punk songs. Yes, there is a synthesizer here but don't be scared! Upon buying and playing the album the first time around I found myself playing SHOT BY BOTH SIDES repeatedly. About my third time through I really started to dig on the whole album. There is a bit of a two-tone ska bounce to alot of the songs MY TULPA, GREAT BEAUTICIAN IN THE SKY. SHOT BY BOTH SIDES is a steady driving punk number (the song that convinced me to buy the album.) REAL LIFE and 'MOTORCADE' have a international espionage sneakiness about them. MAGAZINE redefine punk in the tradition of the emotionally detached VELVET UNDERGROUND and even PINK FLOYD's psychedelic flowing soundscapes.
