Customer Reviews of Re-ac-tor
Neil at his rockin' best This album, Neil's first and penultimate 80s album with Crazy Horse, was PANNED upon its release in 1981. It was indicative of Neil's wandering style that this should follow the country of "Hawks and Doves" and be followed by the vocoder-laced, futuristic "Trans" a year later. This song set is, simply put, incredible riff-based rock and roll, Neil's first real hard rock effort. While some of the songs are somewhat repetitive ("T-Bone," especially, with its nine minutes of "Got mashed potatoes, ain't got no T-bone"), it is more than made up for with such tracks as "Southern Pacific," "Motor City," and "Shots." This album has climbed in esteem over the years, although not as much as "On the Beach" or "Hawks and Doves." Neil wouldn't revisit this style until "Ragged Glory" and the ultra-feedback live albume "Weld." This is a great album, though, his last really great album until "Ragged Glory" a decade later.
Overlooked Classic
I always liked the hard rockin' Neil more than the folkie or the other weirder stuff he's tried over the years. This one in particular struck me when I first heard it on an old cassette (this is the first time it's on cd). "Shot's" is the obvious classic, with the sound effects & the great pyrotechnic riff over & over. Maybe that's why I like this album so much. A song like "T-Bone" gets criticism for being nine minutes long with the same two lines of lyrics over & over again, but it's got a killer riff. That's why I like funk & electronic music so much is they find a groove & run with it for awhile. System of a Down is good for keeping you off balance & getting your energy going, but Re*Ac*Tor is good for chugging along down the highway (especially "Southern Pacific"). I only gave it four stars mostly cause when you compare it to "Rust Never Sleeps" the lyrics don't hold up as well (although I do like the goofy "Surfer Joe & Moe the Sleaze"), but it rocks even harder.
r-r-r-r-r-r-r-repitition
This is one of Neil's best albums. I prefer the rock side of NY's work, such as Zuma and Ragged Glory. If your like me, and love lengthy guitar solos and distortion than you will really like this cd. Neil was going for repitition on this album and he definately got his message across. All the songs are awesome, but my favorite would have to be T-Bone, which has excellent guitar. Neil shows his rocking side on this album and there are plenty of his unique solos.
