Customer Reviews of Ray of Light
A must for any cd collection. This is quite simply a stunning album, and very well received critically. (NB: Madonna had never won a grammy until this album!) Not that awards and critical acclaim are important but on this occasion, it is very well deserved.
All the tracks have Madonna's staple sound (that make her 'Madonna'), but are genuinely exceptional.
Very moving, uplifting and thought provoking.
Great dance, great pop, and beautiful ballads.
Staring with the atmospheric and painfully sad 'Drowned World' the album picks up pace on track 2 with probably the weakest song on the album, Swim.
Most will know the singles, Drowned World (a UK single), Ray of Light (just feel the energy in this track!), Nothing Really Matters, Frozen and The Power of Goodbye. The remaining tracks are just as powerful - Skin (a fantastic trance / dance track - a crime this was not a single), Sky Fits Heaven, the beautiful Little Star (actually the double a for the UK, accompanying Drowned World), the smooth To Have and Not to Hold, and the very guitar heavy, punky and surreal Candy Perfume Girl.
This is an album everyone should have in their collection.
A career highlight, and considering the quality of Madonnas material, thats an incredible feat.
She did it again!
Ray of Light is Madonna's best album since Like A Prayer in my opinion. From the slow, powerful tunes of Mer Girl and Candy Perfume Girl to the fast dancy tracks Ray of Light and Nothing Really Matters, this album hits home "quicker then a Ray of Light", offering all electronica has to give.
Substitute For Love/Drowned World - A powerful song describing her relationships, from the opening blips to the ending words, this song is definetly one of the best on the album. Extremely powerful as well, immediatly proving this album is going to be a keeper.
GRADE: 9.7/10
Swim - Somewhere in between the slow SFL/DW and the dance track Ray of Light, Swim is another masterpiece straight from the electronica general store. Madonna describes how "we can't carry these sins on our back don't wanna carry anymore. I'm gonna carry this train off the track gonna swim to the ocean floor."
GRADE: 8.9/10
Ray of Light - We've all heard it. Madonna's best dance tune since Vogue from 1990's "I'm Breathless". It ends the era of the slow songs of "Bedtime Stories" and "Something To Remember", which had very few dancey tunes. (STR none at all.) This song is one of my favorite Madonna tracks, well actually what got me into Madonna in the first place! "And I feel like I just got home...."
GRADE: 9.9/10
Candy Perfume Girl - A sensual ballad, extremely powerful, kinda a electronic version of "Bedtime Stories". Not really one of my preference but different people have different tastes.
GRADE: 8.0/10
Skin - What can I say? Electronica with that friendly mysteriousness. One more gem in a long line of diamonds and emeralds.
GRADE: 8.5/10
Nothing Really Matters - One of the more dancy songs on the album, altering between slow and fast. With that message that has been re-said over and over since "All You Need Is Love" and before. But of course Madonna puts a new spin on it. (With a little aid from electronica :))The video didn't make a lot of sense to me, but the song is awesome! "Love is all we need!"
GRADE: 9.2/10
Sky Fits Heaven - Another awesome track, starting out with the songs theme, Sky Fits Heaven so fly it... Building up to the chorus. After the first chorus the song begins to speed up. Not really one of the dance songs I love Madonna for, but still a masterpiece! And definetly one of the gems to buy Ray of Light for!
GRADE: 9.0/10
Shanti/Ashtangi - What is it about songs in another language? Mysterious, dancy, with that meaningful edge. I personally never read the English translation, I think that it spoils all the mystery and fun. Give this song one spin before you ruin it and read the translation in the booklet.
GRADE: 9.3/10
Frozen - Another track on the subject of love. The best love song on the album after the first track. This is another song that shows how well Madonna melds electronica with pop. The video had some kick butt effects as well...
GRADE: 8.9/10
The Power of Goodbye - A song of love lost, you will fall instantly in love with this song. One of my favorites on this album it absoulutely ROCKS! "There's no greater power then the power of goodbye..."
GRADE: 9.5/10
To Have and Not to Hold - A confusing song to me, the more I tug at it, the more I get caught up in it. Haunting, and has a quality that I can't put my finger on that often puts me straight to sleep at night. See this album isn't just for great listening, its for easy sleeping at night! ;) "Like a moth to a flame"...
GRADE: 8.5/10
Little Star - Madonna was a mother when Ray of Light came out, its only appropriate for her to have a song for her daughter. It provides easy listening, where you can just relax.
GRADE: 8.5/10
Mer Girl - For the record, this is the only song on this record I don't especially love. The album has slowed down considerably since the 10th track. (The Power of Goodybe.) Halfway through the song begins to start to get boring for me. But, like the rest of the album, you have to let it grow on you. The song has a feeling of escape, which we can all understand.
GRADE: 7.5/10
Ray of Light deserves a place on everyone's shelf. If you can appreciate it you can love it. I've said this about a lot of Madonna albums, but you really haven't HEARD her until you've heard this. Here, Madonna truely showed the potential of electronica. Bottom line, BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!!
Not an Album Its An Experience!
The electronic sounds the east indian sounds mixed in with her mature voice and meaningful lyrics. I think this is one of her best albums to date.
