Customer Reviews of Radio Flyer
"History is in the Mind of the teller...." I had seen this movie a couple time when I was younger. It always made me sad. But I saw it on Tv recently and decided to watch it, and I did. But I didn't closely watch it. Because I came on Amazon.com and read some reviews that opened my eyes to the movie in a new way. And with knowing this detail the end makes a lot more sense.
Th story is about Mickey and Bobby. Two brothers who live their mother, their stepfather, and a dog. And later a pet turle as well. But Bobby is being abused by the stepfather so together Bobby and Mickey work to make an escape for him, via a Radio Flyer wagon that they make into a flyer.
Now I'm not going to tell you what will help you understand the movie better on many different levels, as many other reviews talk about it.
But I would like to talk about the childrens performances. Both Elijah Wood and Joseph Marzello are absolutely amazing. Its worth seeing the movie just for their performances alone. If you're a fan of Elijah Wood and have'nt seen this, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR.! And if you have seen it, watch it again, and bear in mind that "History is in the mind of the teller, truth is the teller."
So you be the judge of what the movie and the ending are. :D
This deals freely with domestic abuse so if you like to pretend its not there, well.... I wont even go there. But for everyone else *enjoy*.! :D
BEAUTIFUL! Highlights the magic of childhood.
This movie is essentially about the destruction that is child abuse, but doesn't dwell on this fact. What it dwells on is young Bobby's inventiveness and innocence, and his love for flight. Unlike most young Hollywood actors, Joseph Mazzelo is apparently unaffected by fame and gives a realistic performance of a first grader, instead of coming off like a child-puppet with a hidden microphone through which a squeaky-voiced adult is speaking.
Through the thick and thin, Bobby (portrayed by the highly esteemed Joseph Mazzelo) struggles to remain whole, to fend of attacks from The King (his mother's new husband) and to live up to the expectations of his two-years-older brother, Mikey (played by a young Elijah Wood). Dramatic only in the sense that adults may feel some sense of loss for the beauty that is childhood, Radio Flyer is an uplifting excursion into the awed fantasies of a little boy. James Horner was the right man for the soundtrack, the cast was well-chosen, and there are enough humorous spots to deflect the attention from the more painful accounts of beating and belting. I watched this movie for the first time when I was 12, however, and felt outdated because, even then, I realized that that brief period in childhood that keeps you alive with hope, was over. However it was nice, even if only momentarily, to re-enter.
deserves one word - WOW
This movie just completely blows me away. It even made my mom tear up. Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello do an amazing job, and especially at such a young age. And to think that Elijah grew up to do more amazing films like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But this movie really is superb. Wonderful yet sad story, and by the end it makes you want to call up one of those hotlines for physically abused children and help out. If I could, I'd give it 10 stars.
