Customer Reviews of RCA M4002 Opal Series MP3 Player with 2GB Flash Memory

The RCA Opal in MY eyes!
I love it because it's my favorite color, blue! Plus it holds uber lots of songs. The ear buds fit perfectly in my small ears. The tips fell of easily and I lost one, though. I like how it shows the artist, song and even the album cover. My old Mp3 player couldn't do that. I really like how you can change the color settings for the screen. I wasn't to happy that it didn't come with many accesories, or any accesories at that. I would rather have the Nano, but this is a great alternative for anyone on a budget. I still haven't got the picture and video to work though, since downloading the converter messed up our computer and deleted temporary files. I give it 2 thumbs up and 4 stars though!

So far, so good...
I've owned one for about 3 weeks now, and enjoy it quite a bit. To my mind it's one of the most stylish-looking non-ipods in its price bracket, even if it does look more like a late model cell phone than an mp3 player (this can come in handy if you want to use the voice recorder function. You can hold the device up to your ear and pretend that you're taking a call instead of dictating a work memo or part of your Great American Novel Makes me feel less self-conscious anyway).<
><
>The screen is bright and adequate for menu purposes under artificial lighting or indirect sunlight but washes out under direct sunlight. I can't imagine it being good for watching videos, but then I've never seen the appeal of watching short video clips on a screen half the size of a playing card (or less) when you could be listening to music or to a good book on it.<
><
>The Opal has proven fairly sturdy, surviving a drop unto a carpeted floor, being accidentally banged into the side of the cpu while dangled from the headphone cord (don't ask), and generally rattling around in my really crowded purse for three weeks. I like the interface: you don't have to mash the buttons to get results, just tap them lightly, and the menu screens are simple and easy to navigate once you get the hang of them ("M" cycles between two menu screens and the music you're currently playing, when in the menu screens you use the volume control buttons to move up and down and the play/pause button for "enter"). Plus it just sits well in my hand. Sound output quality is solid, however I am starting to get some hisses and pops from the earbuds that came with the device. Battery life seems to be about 6-8 hours a charge, which is adequate for me, and it takes maybe 60-90min. to recharge. Both of those are adequate for what I use it for. <
><
>It does have its drawbacks though. Quickly double-tapping the skip forward/skip back buttons makes it restart, and if there's a way of creating playlists for it, I haven't figured that out. And it really hates being plugged into my computer at the same time as my flash-based memory stick-it's crashed the computer both times I've had them plugged in together. There are also NO official accessories beyond what comes with it: I assume generic car chargers and things like that will work for it, but it's nearly impossible to find mp3 player cases that will fit it-I'm going to try one of the designs Kroo made for the G4 Ipod mini, and I've seen reviews claiming that there's a Nokia cell phone case (probably for the 5300, which is 3 times as thick as the Opal but roughly the same length and width) which fits the Opal.<
><
>Overall, though, this one does what I need it to do with a minimum of fuss, and for the moment I recommend it. I will update this review if anything goes wrong.

mediocre buy-an ipod nano it's not!
If you are going to buy this, don't expect a nano. The lcd is very weak for any sort of video, but handy as a menu screen. My chief complaints revolve around how long it takes to charge (hours on my dual core pc) and the fact that it sometimes is on when you think it's not, and the result is a dead battery when you think it's charged. Sound quality is good, no beef there. All in all, for $70, I suppose it's a good buy, but I also haven't experienced anything close to the battery life claimed.
