Customer Reviews of R.E.M. - Tourfilm
That Better Not Be Styrofoam, Pal! R.E.M. has put together two very good concert films with the best being Tourfilm, which chronicles its 1989 world tour for its breakout CD, Green. The songs in the film are primarily from its third through sixth studio albums (Fables, Life's Rich Pageant, Document and Green), which was when the band was starting to make its impact on mainstream America. I have the VHS version of the show, but the sound is very good anyway and the band puts on a pretty good show. Michael Stipe is very eccentric in this video (the heading of my review is a quote from Stipe in the video, which shows that he was "out there"). But he still is in pretty good voice, as is Mike Mills who is very prominent in backing vocals.
This concert film ranks a little ahead of its second film, Road Movie, which came from the 1995 Monster tour, as the song choices on Tourfilm have better stood the test of time compared to those from Monster, which is R.E.M.' weakest CD release. A must!
Awesome
I first watched the VHS version back in 1991 and didn't want to give it back! It is a great home version of a concert...if you are an old R.E.M. fan, definitely get Tourfilm and enjoy! There aren't any DVD "perks" on it, which was a disappointment, but the concert itself was true R.E.M.-AWESOME!
Great performance and great visuals.

This is a great document of the Green tour for a seasoned R.E.M. fan. A lot of the film is shot in black and white, which really adds a lot to the feel of it. The color shots are saved for some of the best moments of the film like "You Are The Everything". There are some things about the film that may be off-putting, like Stipe's somewhat eccentric behavior or his atrocious haircut and the editing in some parts of the film, but these things obviously have no bearing on the excellent performance contained therein and the film is really great overall. One of best aspects of the film is probably Stipe's level of energy as he bounces and shimmies all over the stage like a 6 year old on a sugar high. There are really superb versions of "You Are The Everything", "Perfect Circle", "King of Birds", "Fall On Me", "These Days", "World Leader Pretend" and "I Believe" in this footage. There are lots of cool pieces of film projected behind the band just as they did later on the Monster tour.
