Customer Reviews of Karita Mattila ~ Strauss - Four Last Songs · Orchestral Songs / Berlin Phil. · Abbado
It's a good recording I have listened to many versions of the "four last songs". This is not my favourite, but still it's a good recording. I particularly liked the choices of songs in this album. I like "Gesang der Apollopriesterin" very much. Karita's voice is not as big as Norman, but has very feminine and beautiful quality.
Berlin Philhamonic's performance is superb, and Abbado is one of the greatest conductors in our time. I have never worked with him. But I have seen his conducting many times in rehearsals and concerts with Berlin Philhamonic. He is a genuine musician. His conducting is all about music not showing off like Lorin Maazel or Riccardo Mutti sometimes do. Is this album worth listening? The answer is yes. Is the album worth buying? It's up to you. I listened to most of my recordings before I purchased them.
A superb CD
Karita Mattila is in this music. Her upper range is gloriously expansive and has the purity that is especially popular nowadays. Claudio Abbado has not recorded as much Strauss as his predecessor, but I dare say this recording approaches those in depth of perception. The Berlin Philharmonic is in marvellous form, even in the Four Last Songs taken from live performances. Mattila also delivers a fine Four Last songs, maybe not matching Schwarzkopf, but finer than many we will hear today. It is definitely worth the investigating of Straussians for the orchestral songs, which sound like miniature operas.
Gesang der Apollopriesterin!!!
I bought this CD for the "Vier Letzte Lieder", but I have to say I liked the other orchestral songs more interesting and better done. Mattila's VLL are beautifully sung throughout, but somehow lacking in character.
BUT: I could listen to the "Gesang der Apollopriesterin" a hundred times and I would not get enough. It is a gorgeous song and wonderfully done. I hope, I have a chance to hear Mattila do it live someday!
