Psion's been around the handheld industry as long as the rest of the big manufacturers, and they're not changing their large-scale design for anybody. While the latest Psion, the 5mx, looks similar to the Psion 5 (which is in turn similar to other previous iterations), it integrates various internal changes that make it a more powerful machine.

The Psion's large format aims at users who need more power than a Palm-sized palmtop and more portability than a notebook PC. While you won't be using the 5mx in hand that often--it's a bit too bulky and weighs three-quarters of a pound--its well-designed case sits flat on a table or even your leg. And it stays steady while you're typing or tapping on the screen with the comfortable pencil-length stylus. It's also one of the few handhelds anymore to ship with a keyboard, and a very usable one at that.

The Psion can connect to the Internet wirelessly via its IrDA (infrared) port when using specific models of wireless phones or pagers--or via the optional Psion 56 Kbps travel modem. In our tests, PC synchronization worked seamlessly, with speedy transfer even using the serial port interface cable.

Armed with 16 MB of memory/storage (compared to the 8 MB of the Psion Series 5 before it), the 5mx opens applications quickly and multitasks smoothly. It was also refreshing to be able to actually type in our handheld's word processor and e-mail programs, even if we had to hunt and peck for a while before we got used to the smaller keys.

Although the 640 x 240 screen lacks color, text and images displayed crisply in gray scale, and a unique zoom feature allows you to increase the size of the text you're working with to see it more clearly. If you're a Palm lover, you'll be disappointed by the 5mx's heft and bulk. But if you're a user looking to get more out of your handheld PC, this Psion offers near-laptop capabilities. --J. Curtis

Customer Reviews of Psion Series 5MX Palmtop Computer

Psion vs. the pocket pc
I spent a lot of time researching which gizmo to buy. I'm an M.D. and wasn't sure I needed one at all - I was happy carrying around my binder, calander, scheduler, etc. There are mainly 3 operating systems - the OS (Palm and Handspring), Windows CE (Compaq Ipaq and Jornada), and EPOC (Psion). I chose the Psion because it supposedly had superior medical shareware. Also I wanted a device with a keyboard and one that could do wordprocessing and spreadsheets. The medical software wasn't that good so I give you my overall impression of the hardware. The Psion is a nice piece of equipment. It weighs about 12 oz with its 2 double A batteries (one month life usually). I think it's a bit to heavy to carry everywhere - it may fit well in a lab coat but forget your pocket. The resolution is higher than the Palm however, the screen itself is difficult to see, mainly because of glare in almost all conditions. The keyboard is nice, but it's too small to touch type unless you have really small hands. My hands are normal size (male) and I couldn't touch type with it. I suppose with practice though it would be possible. I would usually find myself balancing it in one hand and using the stylet in the other and then putting the stylet down to type with one finger - not very slick. I kept wishing I hand a Handspring or Palm. My wife has a Handsping and I've played with that quite a bit. I plan to send my Psion back. It's a good tool and would probably be useful to some, but for me it didn't work out. I think I will try the Compaq Ipaq next - which has a great screen and very good resolution.

Great PDA, Substance over Style
As someone who works in the high tech environment I am exposed to a variety of PDA's with coworkers and clients. I have used a number of different devices and have found all of them lacking. Well now I have what I consider to be the best PDA available, the Psion 5mx. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that this was the best value I could find in today's market. What a delight to enter data with a real keyboard. To be able to download Word and Excel files from my office desk top computer to the 5mx and work on them while I am traveling. Meeting with a client and being able to make changes to a price quote because I have the spreadsheet in my 5mx. Lugging around my laptop was always a pain, the 5mx gives me the access I need to files while I am away from my desk in a neat little package. A great operating system, bullt in programs that are fast and efficient, no longer am I kept waiting for the Windows hourglass. It is expandable with Compact Flash cards, (the same type as you use in a digital camera) so they are much less expensive and easier to obtain than a PDA's manufacturers proprietary card. There is a lot of software available on the net, much of it freeware or shareware. This is a great PDA designed for someone who is serious about having a real business tool without all the marketing hype.

I Love It - And It loves Me!
Well, I like to think so, anyway. I spend more time staring lovingly at this thing than at my wife. I've had it for eighteen months now.
Really an excellent product. Great keyboard, great memory, great battery life. Synching up to the PC was no problem. Small enough and light enough to take it anywhere. Stands up to the occasional knock. No flaws yet.
