Customer Reviews of Pray
RSJ pulls off a finely crafted and awesome rock album! When Rebecca St. James steps into the studio she hasn't to be absolutley brilliant to watch. This album sounds, and feels like the most brilliant work in rock (both Christian and secular). This time around Rebecca's singing sounds more like that of a rock songstress (esp. Alanis Morissette) and the drum loops that accompany her are a great concept that pump up the tempo. Her skill at creating musical hooks are excellent, and it is in this way that she rivals her secular counterpart Alanis, and even Sheryl Crow. Tedd T., the albums producer and cowriter, is also an excellent tallent and is on the cutting edge of his business.
The centerpieces of this album are the songs that are sung in remembrance of two of Christian music best writers and performers. Rebecca covers Rich Mullin's "Hold Me Jesus" in such a tender, but upbeat way. Her version of "Lord Your Beautiful" would make Keith Green proud. But even though these songs serve as a memoir to the awesome legacy of music these men left behind they focus never gets off of the subject of these songs, God.
There is no way you can ignore the rock prowess she displays on songs like "Give Myself Away" and the title track "Pray". Rebecca has two things that most Christian artist don't have; guts and good music. Her lyrics are unabashed and not at all shy to show her love for her Saviour, but her music doesn't suffer because of this respect. She really is sincere and authentic in her delivery and in her lyrics. The closing song "Omega" really feels like it is her pray and her hope for all of those who listen to this album. A
Rebecca St. James: A Women After God's Own Heart
Rebecca St. James really got me interested in Christian music. Before I really didn't know about it. My friend went to a Christmas Concert in Cumberland, MD. She told me how remarkable she was. I went to my local Christian Bookstore and listened to Pray the first song on this CD. It was Cool! Her music is very upbeat and phat, but at the same time the Word comes through. From the first time I heard her, she became my favorite Singer. I also must recomned her other CD's Christmas, God, and Rebecca St. James. If you like her also try Jennifer Knapp, Crystal Lewis, and Margret Becker!!
An enjoyable album.
The first time I had ever heard of Rebecca was when I saw her live. I can't remember the exact date but it was in Kamloops, BC. She had just released Pray and I was skeptical going to see her as myself, am not a religious person. But boy, did I have a good time!
Not only did she play a long and brilliant set, there were many times when she'd take time-outs for chats with the audience and made it a really enjoyable experience. She was signing autographs after the show and not having any Rebecca merchandise myself, bought Pray and got her to sign it. She was friendly and endearing and I really enjoyed meeting her.
Years after purchasing Pray (and not having listened to it in a while), my respect and general like for Rebecca and her music are still there entirely, if not more. It's one of those albums that you still ENJOY after years passing.
Rebecca has an interesting way of incorporating worship with catchy lyrics and her diverse euro-pop sound. Her voice is strong and inviting and always leaves the ears wanting more and the rare thing is, you feel that way after each song. I always feel that everything with turn out okay in the end after I'm finished listening to Pray and it's an album that really makes me feel hopeful about the future.
It's hard to inspire people that much through music and Rebecca is someone that definitely inspires through Pray and I'm sure she will through whatever else she has done or will do. It's an album that at least deserves a listen to whether you're a religious person or not, because her lyrics still inspire the non-believers.
