Customer Reviews of Poseidon (Two-Disc Special Edition)
98 Mins of my life that I will never get back. I saw this in the theater, and knew then it was bad, so you may be wondering why I bought the DVD. Good question. It could be because the original from 1972 is my favorite movie of all time, and even caused me to travel cross country to attend the final fan club reunion in May '06. It could be to add to my collection of bad movies, where I can point it out to friends and say "can you believe I own this?" It could be because the disks will make great movie-themed coasters for my Oscar party. But, deep down, I think it's because of my love for the original. I tried so hard to like this movie, but everyone envolved with the production, starting with the writer, didn't care about what they were doing, so how could we? There are times when I still cry at Belle Rosen's death from '72. The only time I cried at "Poseidon" was when I left the theatre, and knew I could not get my money back. I got the SE's of both the original and the "reimagining" simply so I could say I gave this one a shot. If you love CGI, buy this, if you love good movies (not even great, just good) then save yourself from this waste of talent and time.
Better Than Expected
After all the criticism this movie attracted, I'll admit that I didn't have high hopes. It was, however, better than I expected.

>For those who, like me, haven't seen the original and are flying pretty much blind in considering this film, "Poseidon" tells the story of the cruise ship Poseidon. After meeting a rogue wave, the ship capsizes, killing many passengers and stranding the rest inside the overturned boat. A small group of passengers, led by Dylan (Josh Lucas) and Robert (Kurt Russell), leave the rest of the survivors and set out on a perilous journey to escape the sinking ship before it's too late.

>Let me begin by saying that this movie is extremely intense. The 98 minutes of this film consist of nail-biting situation after nail-biting situation after nail-biting situation. If you're looking for a movie that doesn't halt for a whole lot of talking, this is the one to see.

>I've read many other reviews that complain about the acting, and I couldn't agree less. I think the acting was pretty darn good. What can be expected with cast members like Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss?

>The criticism that I will agree with involves the beginning sequence. The director obviously wanted to "wow" viewers with the vastness of the ship and accordingly did a long pan around the entire thing. Of course, all this was achieved through special effects, and with today's special effects, I would have expected more. The ship looked fake and even slightly cartoonish. The later special effects (ie. the ship getting hit by the wave and the ship slowly sinking) are not as disappointing, simply because the plot takes over and doesn't leave you too much time to consider the special effects shortcomings.

>As an action-adventure film, this movie delivers. It doesn't deliver too much depth or character-development, but it makes up for these in pure intensity.

>4-stars - watch it, it's worth your while.
The Poseidon Conjecture
It is difficult to believe that such copious amounts of money and state-of-the-art technology could produce a film even more boring and flatulent than the original. Somehow Wolfgang Petersen has managed. This movie isn't just incompentently directed, poorly acted, and deadly dull. It is badly written, stupid, and ridiculous. Rent this CD, place it in your microwave, set the timer at 5 minutes, and get drunk in joyous celebration. You will have rid the world of a minor evil and expunged 98 minutes of unmitigated crap.
